How to Apply for Country Representative – Roster Various Countries
at WeWorld
About WeWorld
WeWorld is an Italian-founded humanitarian and development organization operating in 15 countries, with over 120 emergency, humanitarian aid, and development projects focused primarily on women, girls, and young people as agents of change. Its dual humanitarian-development approach, spanning WASH, EiE, CVA, Food Security, and Protection, makes it a strong fit for professionals who thrive in multi-sectoral crisis settings and want to work for an organization that prioritizes gender equality and community-led transformation. Joining WeWorld means contributing to a respected European NGO with a clear social mission and a strong presence in protracted crises and emergency responses.
About This Role
As a Country Representative on WeWorld's roster, you will be deployed on short notice to fill unexpected leadership gaps in various country offices, acting as the senior in-country authority reporting to the Head of Regional Unit. You will oversee multi-sectoral humanitarian and development programs, manage staff and budgets, ensure donor compliance, and represent WeWorld to authorities, donors, and partners. This role is impactful because you will stabilize and steer critical operations during transitions, directly affecting the quality and continuity of assistance to crisis-affected communities.
A Day in the Life
A typical day might involve chairing a morning coordination meeting with sector leads, reviewing a donor report under deadline, and meeting with a government ministry or donor representative to advocate for program continuity. You may also handle urgent security or HR issues, approve budgets, and mentor national staff, all while preparing for a potential handover to a permanent Country Representative. The pace is fast, the context can change quickly, and you must balance strategic oversight with hands-on problem-solving.
Who WeWorld Is Looking For
- Extensive experience (typically 7+ years) in senior country-level management in both emergency and development settings, with proven ability to lead multi-sectoral programs (WASH, EiE, CVA, Food Security, Protection).
- Demonstrated success in managing large, complex budgets and diverse teams in insecure or remote environments, including strong donor compliance knowledge (e.g., ECHO, EU, UN agencies, bilateral donors).
- Fluency in English required; proficiency in French, Spanish, Arabic, or Italian strongly preferred given WeWorld's operational regions, plus willingness to deploy at short notice to various countries.
- Deep understanding of humanitarian principles, protection mainstreaming, and gender-transformative programming, with experience representing an INGO to government officials, donors, and clusters.
Tips for Applying to WeWorld
-
1
Explicitly state your availability for short-notice, short-term deployments and list the countries or regions where you are willing and able to deploy, since this roster is specifically for filling unexpected gaps.
-
2
Tailor your CV to highlight country-level leadership roles where you managed multi-sectoral humanitarian and development portfolios, using WeWorld's sector language (WASH, EiE, CVA, Food Security, Protection).
-
3
Emphasize experience in both emergency response and protracted crisis settings, as WeWorld explicitly seeks candidates with strong experience in both, and mention specific donor compliance (ECHO, EU, UN, etc.) you have handled.
-
4
Include a concise cover letter that explains why you want to be on a roster for interim deployments rather than a fixed post, and demonstrate flexibility, cultural adaptability, and readiness to travel on short notice.
-
5
Reference WeWorld's mission and focus on women, girls, and young people in your application, showing alignment with their values and approach to community-led change.
What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter
['Your proven track record as a Country Representative or senior country manager in both emergency and development contexts, with specific examples of stabilizing or leading country programs during transitions.', 'Your ability to deploy rapidly and adapt to different contexts, including any experience in interim management, gap-filling, or roster-based deployments.', 'Concrete experience managing multi-sectoral programs and diverse teams, with budget sizes and donor portfolios, to demonstrate you can hit the ground running.', "Your commitment to WeWorld's mission, particularly gender equality and protection mainstreaming, and how you have integrated these principles into program leadership."]
Research Before Applying
To stand out, make sure you've researched:
- Study WeWorld's current operations in the 15 countries where they work, especially their emergency and protracted crisis interventions, to understand the contexts you might be deployed to.
- Review WeWorld's strategic focus on women, girls, and young people as agents of change, and look for their published reports or project descriptions to align your language with their approach.
- Understand the structure of WeWorld's Humanitarian Aid Unit and how Country Representatives interact with the Head of Regional Unit and headquarters in Italy.
- Research the donors WeWorld typically works with (e.g., ECHO, EU, UN agencies, Italian Cooperation) and their compliance requirements, as you will be responsible for donor management.
Prepare for These Interview Topics
Based on this role, you may be asked about:
- 1 How you have previously managed a country office during a leadership gap or sudden transition, including how you prioritized immediate actions in the first 30 days.
- 2 Your experience leading multi-sectoral humanitarian responses (WASH, EiE, CVA, Food Security, Protection) and how you ensure integration and quality across sectors.
- 3 How you handle donor compliance and reporting under pressure, especially with ECHO, EU, or UN donors, and examples of resolving compliance challenges.
- 4 Your approach to security management and duty of care in insecure environments, including decision-making during a crisis that affects staff safety.
- 5 How you would represent WeWorld to external stakeholders, including government authorities, donors, and clusters, and your experience in coordination mechanisms.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Applying without clearly stating your availability for short-notice, short-term deployments—this roster is specifically for rapid gap-filling, so ambiguity about your flexibility will disqualify you.
- Submitting a generic CV that does not highlight country-level leadership and multi-sectoral program management, as the role requires proven seniority and breadth.
- Ignoring WeWorld's specific mission and values in your application, such as their focus on women, girls, and young people, which signals a lack of genuine interest in the organization.
