How to Apply for Controller

at AidKit

🏢 About AidKit

AidKit builds technology that transforms complex cash assistance programs into secure, dignified experiences for vulnerable populations, including unhoused and unbanked individuals. Born from a nonprofit initiative during the COVID-19 pandemic, AidKit now powers some of the nation's most innovative public safety net programs and has distributed hundreds of millions of dollars to people in need. Working here means directly contributing to meaningful social impact while being part of a rapidly growing, mission-driven team.

About This Role

As AidKit's senior internal accounting leader, you will be accountable for the integrity of the books, accounting judgments, financial close, financial reporting, controls, and audit readiness. This is a hands-on Controller role in a small company, so you'll personally lead core accounting work while also owning the systems, processes, and controls. Your work will ensure that AidKit can continue to scale its impact by maintaining robust financial operations that support complex cash assistance programs.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day might involve reviewing and approving journal entries, reconciling accounts, and preparing financial reports for leadership. You could also spend time improving accounting systems, documenting processes, and coordinating with external auditors or other teams to ensure compliance and accuracy. As a remote team member, you'll collaborate via video calls and messaging tools, and you'll have the autonomy to manage your schedule while meeting critical deadlines.

🎯 Who AidKit Is Looking For

  • Experienced accounting professional with 7+ years in progressively responsible roles, including hands-on experience in a small company or startup environment.
  • Strong technical accounting skills, including proficiency with GAAP, financial close processes, and audit preparation.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement accounting systems and internal controls from scratch or significantly improve existing ones.
  • Mission-driven individual who is excited to apply their accounting expertise to support social impact and is comfortable working remotely in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

📝 Tips for Applying to AidKit

1

Highlight any experience you have with nonprofit accounting, fund accounting, or accounting for government contracts or grants, as AidKit works closely with state agencies and public safety net programs.

2

Emphasize your ability to work hands-on in a small company: provide concrete examples of times you personally executed accounting tasks (e.g., month-end close, reconciliations) rather than just managing a team.

3

Show familiarity with accounting software and systems: mention specific tools you've implemented or used (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, Sage Intacct) and how you've improved processes.

4

Demonstrate your understanding of audit readiness: describe your experience preparing for and leading audits, and any interactions with external auditors.

5

Connect your personal values to AidKit's mission: explain why you're passionate about using your accounting skills to support equitable access to financial aid and public benefits.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Your hands-on experience in a small company or startup, specifically how you've managed the full accounting cycle and built scalable processes.", "Your expertise in audit readiness and internal controls, with examples of how you've ensured compliance and accuracy in previous roles.", "Your familiarity with accounting for complex funding streams, such as government grants, contracts, or nonprofit funds, and how that aligns with AidKit's work.", "Your motivation to work at AidKit: tie your personal values to the company's mission of making aid radically accessible and dignified."]

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Focusing only on big-company experience: AidKit is a small, hands-on environment, so emphasizing only management or oversight roles without personal execution may be a red flag.
  • Ignoring the mission: candidates who don't demonstrate genuine interest in AidKit's social impact may be seen as a poor fit for the company culture.
  • Being vague about technical accounting skills: avoid generic statements about 'accounting experience' without specific examples of systems, processes, or standards you've worked with.
