How to Apply for Associate Program Director, California

at Conservation Lands Foundation, Inc

🏢 About Conservation Lands Foundation, Inc

The Conservation Lands Foundation (CLF) is the only national nonprofit dedicated to protecting, restoring, and expanding the Bureau of Land Management’s National Conservation Lands—38 million acres of monuments, conservation areas, wilderness, and wild rivers. Founded in 2007, CLF operates with a lean team of 25 staff across the West and DC, working hand-in-hand with 90 grassroots groups in its Friends Grassroots Network. This role offers a rare chance to shape conservation policy and grassroots advocacy at a national scale while being rooted in California’s public lands.

About This Role

As Associate Program Director, California, you will support the Senior Program Director in implementing CLF’s California strategy, which includes defending and expanding National Conservation Lands, building the capacity of local Friends groups, and advocating for pro-conservation policies at the state and federal level. You’ll be a key liaison between CLF and its California grassroots partners, helping them engage in BLM land-use planning, legislative campaigns, and media outreach. This position is remote (Southern California preferred) and requires frequent travel to partner communities and public lands.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day might include a morning call with a Friends group in the Mojave to strategize comments on a BLM management plan, followed by an internal team meeting to align on federal legislative priorities. In the afternoon, you might draft a policy brief, coordinate with a coalition partner on a media event, or travel to a community meeting in the evening. Expect a mix of virtual collaboration and on-the-ground engagement with partners across California.

🎯 Who Conservation Lands Foundation, Inc Is Looking For

  • At least 5–7 years of experience in conservation advocacy, grassroots organizing, or public lands policy, with a strong preference for direct experience with BLM lands or National Conservation Lands.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders, including grassroots groups, tribal nations, government agencies, and elected officials.
  • Familiarity with California’s public lands landscape—especially desert, coastal, or forest regions—and the political dynamics affecting conservation in the state.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience translating complex policy into accessible messages for varied audiences.
  • Self-motivated and able to thrive in a remote, team-oriented environment with minimal supervision.

📝 Tips for Applying to Conservation Lands Foundation, Inc

1

Highlight any direct experience working with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) or National Conservation Lands—CLF is laser-focused on these lands, and generic 'public lands' experience won't stand out.

2

Name-drop specific California landscapes or campaigns you've worked on (e.g., Mojave Desert, Carrizo Plain, Berryessa Snow Mountain) to show you understand the state's conservation priorities.

3

Mention any collaboration with grassroots or community-based organizations—CLF’s model is network-centric, so demonstrate you can support, not overshadow, local partners.

4

Use the phrase 'Friends Grassroots Network' in your cover letter to show you’ve done your homework on CLF’s unique approach.

5

If you live in Southern California, state that explicitly in your application—location preference is real, and it signals you can easily travel to key partner sites.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Your track record of supporting grassroots-led conservation campaigns, ideally in California, and how you’ve helped build local capacity.', 'Specific examples of policy wins or advocacy efforts related to BLM lands, National Monuments, or conservation designations.', 'Your ability to work remotely and collaboratively with a distributed team, including experience managing up and across departments.', 'Why CLF’s mission and network model resonate with you personally, and how you’d contribute to the California program’s goals.']

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Focusing only on national policy and ignoring the grassroots, community-led aspect of CLF’s work—they value local partnerships above all.
  • Being vague about your experience with BLM lands; if you haven’t worked with BLM specifically, explain how your skills transfer and show willingness to learn.
  • Applying without demonstrating any connection to California’s public lands or conservation community—remote doesn’t mean disconnected.
