How to Apply for Associate, Foundation Relations

at Civic Nation

🏢 About Civic Nation

Civic Nation is a nonprofit impact hub that builds and scales movements to solve some of America's most pressing challenges—from voter registration to gender equity. Working there means joining a fast-paced, mission-driven team where your work directly fuels democracy and social change. The Development Team is central to this, securing the philanthropic partnerships that make these campaigns possible.

About This Role

As the Associate of Foundation Relations, you'll be the operational backbone of Civic Nation's grant cycle—from prospecting new foundations to drafting proposals and reports, tracking agreements, and maintaining the database. You'll work closely with the Director of Foundation Relations and program staff to ensure seamless, impactful partnerships. This role is ideal for someone who thrives on organization, writing, and moving multiple projects forward in a remote-first but DC-anchored environment.

💡 A Day in the Life

You might start your day reviewing a foundation's RFP and drafting a letter of inquiry, then update the grants calendar and Salesforce records. Later, you'll coordinate with program staff to gather data for a report due next week and join a team check-in to align on outreach strategies. The pace is steady but can spike when deadlines cluster, so you'll constantly balance writing, tracking, and communication.

🎯 Who Civic Nation Is Looking For

  • 1–2 years of experience in fundraising, development, or nonprofit operations, with exposure to grant writing or foundation relations.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to draft clear, compelling proposals and reports under tight deadlines.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, capable of managing multiple grant deadlines, tracking documents, and maintaining accurate database records.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and comfort working collaboratively across teams, with a proactive, solution-oriented mindset.
  • Based in the Washington, DC area and able to work in the DC office one day per week and provide occasional in-person event support.

📝 Tips for Applying to Civic Nation

1

Highlight any experience with grant databases (e.g., Salesforce, Blackbaud, or similar) in your resume and cover letter—Civic Nation values database maintenance as a core function.

2

Showcase your writing by including a brief, relevant writing sample (e.g., a grant proposal excerpt or donor report) with your application, even if not explicitly requested.

3

Demonstrate familiarity with Civic Nation's key campaigns (e.g., When We All Vote, It's On Us) and mention how foundation relations support them.

4

Emphasize your ability to work remotely while being DC-based—address the hybrid requirement directly and express enthusiasm for in-person collaboration.

5

Use your cover letter to tell a story about a time you managed a complex grant cycle or tracked multiple deadlines, quantifying results where possible.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Your specific experience supporting the full grant lifecycle—prospecting, drafting, reporting, and tracking—and how you've improved processes.", "Your ability to write persuasively for foundation audiences, with examples of proposals or reports you've contributed to.", 'Your organizational systems for managing deadlines, documents, and databases in a fast-paced environment.', "Your connection to Civic Nation's mission and why you want to support its development team, especially in a remote-first but DC-anchored role."]
