How to Apply for Assistant General Counsel, Servicing

at GoodLeap

🏢 About GoodLeap

GoodLeap is a fintech company that has deployed over $30 billion in financing for sustainable home upgrades like solar, batteries, and energy-efficient HVAC since 2018. Its AI-powered platform serves over 1 million homeowners and thousands of contractors, making sustainable solutions more accessible. Working here means joining a mission-driven, fast-paced environment at the intersection of clean energy and consumer finance.

About This Role

As Assistant General Counsel, Servicing, you will be the dedicated legal counsel for GoodLeap's Servicing Team, reporting directly to the Deputy General Counsel, EVP. You will provide practical, business-minded legal advice on consumer loan and mortgage servicing, collections, and related regulatory compliance. Your work will directly support the company's ability to service a growing portfolio of sustainable home improvement loans while navigating complex federal and state laws.

💡 A Day in the Life

You might start your day with a call with the Servicing Team to discuss a new collections strategy and its legal implications, then review and revise customer communication templates for compliance with FDCPA and state laws. Later, you could advise on a default management case, coordinate with outside counsel on a bankruptcy matter, and provide training to servicing staff on recent regulatory changes. Your role is a mix of proactive counseling and reactive problem-solving, all in support of GoodLeap's mission.

🎯 Who GoodLeap Is Looking For

  • A practicing attorney with 5+ years of deep, hands-on experience in consumer loan and mortgage loan servicing and collections law, including familiarity with RESPA, TILA, FDCPA, FCRA, and state-specific servicing regulations.
  • Proven ability to advise servicing operations teams on default management, loss mitigation, foreclosure, bankruptcy, and customer complaint resolution in a fast-paced fintech or financial services environment.
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to translate complex legal requirements into actionable guidance for non-lawyers, balancing legal risk with operational needs.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with compliance, operations, and product teams, ideally in a remote or distributed workforce, and a proactive, solution-oriented mindset.

📝 Tips for Applying to GoodLeap

1

Highlight specific experience with consumer loan servicing and collections regulations (e.g., RESPA, TILA, FDCPA, FCRA) and any state-level servicing laws you have handled, as this is the core requirement.

2

Emphasize your ability to partner with servicing operations teams—quantify how you've supported default management, loss mitigation, or collections functions in previous roles.

3

Mention any experience with sustainable home improvement financing or solar loans, as GoodLeap's mission is central to its business and legal needs.

4

Demonstrate familiarity with remote work and cross-functional collaboration, as the role is remote and requires close coordination with the Servicing Team.

5

Show your interest in GoodLeap's nonprofit, GivePower, and the company's broader mission to democratize sustainable home upgrades—this aligns with the company culture.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 How would you advise the Servicing Team on complying with federal and state debt collection laws (FDCPA, state analogs) while maintaining effective collections?
2 Describe a time you helped a servicing operation navigate a complex regulatory change or a high-risk default scenario. What was your approach?
3 How do you balance legal risk with business objectives when advising on loss mitigation or foreclosure processes?
4 What is your experience with RESPA and TILA as they apply to loan servicing, including escrow, error resolution, and information requests?

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Avoid generic legal experience—failing to specifically address consumer loan and mortgage servicing law will make you seem unqualified for this specialized role.
  • Do not focus solely on litigation or general corporate law; this role requires practical, regulatory, and operational advising experience in servicing and collections.
  • Avoid ignoring the company's mission and culture—GoodLeap is mission-driven, and candidates who don't show interest in sustainable home upgrades may be seen as a poor fit.
