How to Apply for Analytics Assistant (Junior Research Officer)

at Opportunity Green

๐Ÿข About Opportunity Green

Opportunity Green is a unique NGO that uses legal, economic, and policy tools to close climate gaps in the aviation and shipping sectorsโ€”two industries often overlooked in climate discussions. Working here means being part of a small, mission-driven team that punches above its weight by bridging science, law, and advocacy to drive real-world change.

About This Role

As an Analytics Assistant (Junior Research Officer), you'll support climate research and data analysis across aviation, shipping, and data centres, with a particular focus on aviation's non-CO2 climate impacts. Your work will directly feed into novel research projects and help the Analytics, Legal, Advocacy, and Climate Diplomacy teams translate complex science into policy action. This is a part-time, remote role ideal for someone who wants to apply quantitative skills to high-impact climate work.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

A typical day might involve extracting and cleaning emissions data from aviation databases, running analyses in Python or R to quantify non-CO2 impacts, and then summarising findings in a briefing note for the Advocacy team. You might also join a cross-team call to discuss how to translate a new research finding into a policy recommendation, or spend time reviewing literature to support a novel research project.

๐ŸŽฏ Who Opportunity Green Is Looking For

  • Holds a degree in physics, chemistry, mathematics, earth science, engineering, or has equivalent experience, with a strong foundation in quantitative analysis.
  • Is proficient in at least one data analysis tool (Excel, Python, R, GIS) and can quickly learn new software; experience with policy analysis is a plus.
  • Has excellent science communication skillsโ€”able to explain complex data clearly to non-technical colleagues and policymakers.
  • Is self-motivated and organised, comfortable working remotely and collaboratively in a part-time capacity, and passionate about climate issues in aviation and shipping.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Opportunity Green

1

Tailor your CV to highlight any coursework, projects, or work experience related to atmospheric science, emissions data, or transportationโ€”especially aviation or shipping.

2

In your cover letter, explicitly mention Opportunity Green's focus on non-CO2 climate impacts from aviation; show you understand why this is a critical but under-addressed issue.

3

Provide concrete examples of how you've used quantitative tools (e.g., Python, R, Excel) to analyse real-world data and communicate findings to a non-expert audience.

4

Demonstrate familiarity with the policy landscape: mention key regulations or initiatives (e.g., ICAO's CORSIA, IMO's GHG strategy) that Opportunity Green engages with.

5

Since the role is remote and part-time, reassure the employer of your ability to manage your time and collaborate effectively across teams, perhaps by citing past remote or interdisciplinary work.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

Focus on: (1) your specific interest in aviation's non-CO2 climate impacts and why you want to research this niche area; (2) your ability to synthesise data and communicate it clearly to policy teams; (3) any experience you have with quantitative tools and how you've applied them to environmental or policy problems; (4) your motivation to work at a small NGO where you can contribute to multiple projects and see the direct impact of your work.

๐Ÿ” Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • โ†’ Read Opportunity Green's recent reports and blog posts, especially those on aviation non-CO2 impacts, to understand their research approach and key messages.
  • โ†’ Familiarise yourself with the basics of non-CO2 climate impacts from aviation (e.g., contrails, NOx, soot) and why they are significant but often overlooked.
  • โ†’ Look into the policy landscape for aviation and shipping emissions at the international level (ICAO, IMO) and identify where Opportunity Green has engaged.
  • โ†’ Explore the backgrounds of the team members you'd be working with (Analytics, Legal, Advocacy, Climate Diplomacy) to understand how your role fits into their workflows.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 How would you approach analysing the non-CO2 climate impacts of aviation, and what data sources would you use?
2 Can you describe a time when you had to explain a complex quantitative finding to a non-technical audience? How did you ensure clarity?
3 What do you know about the current policy gaps in addressing aviation and shipping emissions, and how could data analysis help bridge them?
4 How would you prioritise tasks when supporting multiple teams (Analytics, Legal, Advocacy, Climate Diplomacy) with competing deadlines?
5 Given the part-time, remote nature of the role, how do you stay motivated and organised when working independently?

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Submitting a generic cover letter that doesn't mention Opportunity Green's specific focus on aviation and shipping, or the non-CO2 aspectโ€”this shows a lack of genuine interest.
  • Overemphasising academic knowledge without demonstrating how you've applied analytical skills to real-world data or policy problems.
  • Ignoring the part-time, remote nature of the role and failing to address how you'll manage your time and collaborate effectively in that setup.
