How to Apply for Working Student – Power BI Dashboards & Data Visualization (f/m/x)

at IONITY

🏢 About IONITY

IONITY is revolutionizing long-distance electric vehicle travel by building Europe's leading high-power charging network, making EV journeys enjoyable and sustainable. As a joint venture of major automotive manufacturers, they combine industry expertise with a mission-driven approach to accelerate the transition to electric mobility. Working here offers the chance to contribute directly to reducing carbon emissions while being at the forefront of transportation innovation.

About This Role

This working student role involves designing and maintaining Power BI dashboards specifically for Network Development teams, visualizing rollout metrics, pipeline health, and financial performance against plans. You'll create intuitive visuals that highlight bottlenecks and forecast network growth, directly supporting IONITY's expansion across Europe. Your work will enable data-driven decisions that accelerate the deployment of EV charging infrastructure.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day involves collaborating with Network Development teams to understand their dashboard needs, then designing or updating Power BI visuals that track rollout progress against targets. You might spend the morning refining a pipeline health dashboard to highlight bottlenecks in station deployment, then respond to an ad-hoc request for a financial performance visualization in the afternoon. Between dashboard maintenance and new development, you'll ensure stakeholders have clear, actionable insights to drive IONITY's expansion decisions.

🎯 Who IONITY Is Looking For

  • Currently enrolled in Data Analytics, Business, or related program with hands-on Power BI experience creating reports and dashboards
  • Has specific experience or strong interest in rollout, pipeline, or project tracking dashboards (not just general data visualization)
  • Available for at least 20 hours weekly with flexibility to support recurring reporting cycles and ad-hoc requests
  • Combines technical Power BI skills with business understanding to translate network development metrics into actionable insights

📝 Tips for Applying to IONITY

1

Create a portfolio showcasing 2-3 Power BI dashboards you've built, ideally including at least one related to project tracking or rollout metrics

2

Quantify your Power BI experience - mention specific number of dashboards created, DAX functions used, or data sources connected

3

Research IONITY's current charging network size and expansion plans, then suggest one dashboard metric that could help track their growth

4

Highlight any experience with automotive, energy, or infrastructure projects since IONITY focuses on EV charging network development

5

Mention your availability schedule specifically (e.g., 'available 25 hours weekly with flexibility for Tuesday/Thursday mornings')

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Demonstrate understanding of IONITY's mission to transform EV travel and how data visualization supports network expansion", "Provide specific examples of Power BI dashboards you've created, emphasizing any related to tracking projects, pipelines, or rollouts", "Explain how you would approach visualizing 'pipeline health' or 'bottlenecks' for network development teams", 'Connect your academic background to practical application by mentioning relevant coursework or projects involving business intelligence']

🔍 Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • IONITY's current charging network statistics (number of stations, countries covered, power output capabilities)
  • Their partnership structure with automotive manufacturers (BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Hyundai, etc.)
  • Recent news about European EV charging infrastructure expansion and IONITY's role in it
  • The specific challenges of long-distance EV travel that IONITY aims to solve

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 Walk through a Power BI dashboard you've created for project tracking - what metrics did you include and why?
2 How would you design a dashboard to visualize the health of IONITY's charging station rollout pipeline across Europe?
3 What DAX functions or Power BI features have you used to create calculated measures for financial performance tracking?
4 How would you handle an ad-hoc request from Network Development for a new visualization with a tight deadline?
5 What challenges might arise when visualizing data for stakeholders with varying technical backgrounds, and how would you address them?

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Submitting generic Power BI examples without context about the business problems they solved
  • Failing to demonstrate understanding of rollout/pipeline metrics specific to infrastructure or network development
  • Not showing availability for the required 20+ hours weekly or flexibility for recurring reporting cycles
  • Focusing only on technical Power BI skills without connecting them to business impact for stakeholders
