How to Apply for Vice President, Tax

at Avantus

๐Ÿข About Avantus

Avantus is at the forefront of the clean energy transition, delivering affordable, zero-emission energy through innovative solar power and integrated storage solutions. With a focus on utility-scale projects, the company is driving the deployment of 5 GW of renewable energy, making it a key player in combating climate change. Working at Avantus offers the opportunity to contribute to meaningful environmental impact while being part of a dynamic, growth-oriented team.

About This Role

As Vice President of Tax, you will lead the tax strategy for Avantus, directly supporting the development of 5 GW of utility-scale solar and battery storage projects. This role is critical in maximizing renewable energy tax incentives, such as the Investment Tax Credit (ITC) and Production Tax Credit (PTC), to optimize project economics. You will manage all tax functions, from compliance to risk mitigation, and collaborate with project finance and development teams to drive the company's growth.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

A typical day might start with reviewing tax compliance deadlines for multiple project entities, then meeting with the project finance team to discuss tax equity structures for a new solar+storage project. Afternoon could involve analyzing the impact of proposed IRA regulations on the company's pipeline, followed by a call with external tax advisors to align on audit strategy. You'll also collaborate with legal on partnership agreements to optimize tax benefits.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Avantus

1

1. Highlight specific experience with renewable energy tax credits (ITC, PTC) and partnership structures in your resume, quantifying impact where possible (e.g., 'Managed $X in tax credit monetization for Y MW solar portfolio').

2

2. Tailor your cover letter to emphasize your understanding of Avantus's mission and your ability to support 5 GW of project development through tax strategy.

3

3. Demonstrate leadership in managing tax functions during periods of rapid growth, as Avantus is scaling its project pipeline.

4

4. Include examples of collaborating with cross-functional teams (e.g., project finance, legal) to align tax strategy with business goals.

5

5. Research Avantus's specific projects and recent news, and mention them in your application to show genuine interest.

6

6. (Bonus) If you have experience with battery storage tax incentives, highlight itโ€”it's a key part of Avantus's integrated solutions.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

- Emphasize your deep experience in renewable energy tax, especially with utility-scale solar and storage, and how you have maximized tax incentives in past roles. - Show your strategic thinking: how you would develop a tax strategy that supports Avantus's growth objectives and 5 GW pipeline. - Highlight your leadership in managing tax compliance, audits, and risk, and your ability to work with external advisors. - Express passion for clean energy and Avantus's mission, tying your career goals to their impact.

๐Ÿ” Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • โ†’ - Review Avantus's project portfolio and recent announcements (e.g., new solar/storage projects, partnerships) to understand their scale and technology focus. - Study the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) provisions for solar and storage, including transferability and direct pay, to discuss current tax landscape. - Understand Avantus's competitors and market position in utility-scale renewable energy development. - Look into any recent tax controversies or changes in renewable energy tax policy that could impact the company.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 1. How would you approach structuring tax equity for a utility-scale solar + storage project? Walk through key considerations (e.g., ITC for storage, partnership flip structures).
2 2. Describe a time you identified and implemented an opportunity to maximize tax incentives, resulting in significant cost savings.
3 3. How do you stay current with evolving tax regulations (e.g., IRA provisions) and ensure compliance across multiple projects?
4 4. Given Avantus's 5 GW pipeline, how would you prioritize tax work and manage resources (internal team and external advisors)?
5 5. What is your experience with state and local tax incentives for renewable energy, and how would you integrate them into federal tax strategy?

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • - Avoid being too general about tax experience; failing to demonstrate specific renewable energy knowledge (e.g., partnership taxation, tax credit monetization) will disqualify you. - Don't overlook the 'hands-on' nature of this roleโ€”emphasizing only high-level strategy without showing ability to manage compliance and audits may be seen as a gap. - Avoid ignoring the company's mission; not showing genuine interest in clean energy can signal a lack of cultural fit.
