How to Apply for Vice President of Operations

at State Innovation Exchange

🏢 About State Innovation Exchange

The State Innovation Exchange (SiX) is a unique organization that empowers progressive state legislators to build governing power through policy, strategy, and resource support. Working here means contributing to a mission-driven team that values collaboration across states and with grassroots movements, with a strong commitment to racial, gender, economic, and social justice.

About This Role

As VP of Operations, you will set the vision for SiX's operations function, leading through change and building a high-performing team. You will oversee finance, HR, compliance, IT, and risk management, directly supporting the Executive Director and board to ensure the organization runs smoothly and effectively.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day might start with a check-in with your Finance Director on grant reporting deadlines and budget forecasts, followed by a meeting with the HR Director to discuss employee relations issues or performance review cycles. You might then join the Executive Team to align on strategic priorities, and later review IT systems for security compliance. Throughout the day, you'll respond to emails from staff across states and may end with a virtual coffee chat with a new hire to reinforce SiX's culture.

🎯 Who State Innovation Exchange Is Looking For

  • A seasoned nonprofit operations leader with at least 10 years of senior leadership experience, ideally in advocacy or policy organizations.
  • Deep expertise in nonprofit financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, audits, and grant compliance, with a track record of implementing strong internal controls.
  • Proven experience overseeing HR/people operations, including employee relations, performance management, compensation, and compliance with employment laws.
  • A demonstrated commitment to social justice and the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders, including legislators and grassroots partners.

📝 Tips for Applying to State Innovation Exchange

1

Tailor your resume to highlight specific examples of leading operations through organizational change, such as scaling teams or implementing new systems.

2

In your cover letter, explicitly connect your financial management experience to nonprofit grant budgeting and compliance, as SiX likely relies on diverse funding sources.

3

Showcase any experience working with remote teams or in a distributed organization, as this role is fully remote.

4

Research SiX's current policy priorities and mention how your operations leadership can support their mission of empowering progressive state legislators.

5

Avoid generic language; instead, use specific metrics (e.g., 'managed a $5M budget' or 'oversaw HR for 50+ employees') to demonstrate your impact.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Your commitment to racial, gender, economic, and social justice, and how it aligns with SiX's mission.", 'Your experience in building and leading high-functioning operations teams, with concrete examples of hiring and developing directors.', 'Your ability to serve as a strategic partner to executive leadership, including board reporting and cross-departmental collaboration.', 'Your track record in improving operational efficiency and compliance in a nonprofit setting, especially with grant-funded budgets.']
