How to Apply for Utah Organizer
at United Today, Stronger Tomorrow
๐ข About United Today, Stronger Tomorrow
United Today, Stronger Tomorrow (UTST) is a dynamic organizing project that has been deeply embedded in Utah for six years, delivering millions in federal funds and building grassroots power. They work at the intersection of labor, community, and tribal issues, making a tangible impact on healthcare, jobs, clean energy, and affordability. If you're passionate about community organizing and want to work with a high-performing, collaborative team, this is your chance to be part of systemic change in Utah.
About This Role
As the Utah Organizer, you'll be the driving force behind building and expanding a statewide base of grassroots leaders and community members. This is not a desk jobโyou'll be on the ground, connecting with rural and tribal communities, developing local leaders, and running campaigns that directly affect people's lives. Your work will strengthen organizing infrastructure and ensure that everyday Utahns have a voice in decisions that matter.
๐ก A Day in the Life
A typical day might involve driving to a rural town to meet with a local leader, hosting a community meeting on healthcare access, or calling volunteers to plan a canvass. You'll spend time on the phone and computer coordinating with the team, but the core of your day is face-to-face interactions and building relationships. You'll also have flexibility to work from home when not in the field.

๐ Tips for Applying to United Today, Stronger Tomorrow
Highlight any Utah-specific experience, even if it's personalโlike growing up in a rural town or volunteering with local organizations. Show that you understand Utah's unique political and cultural landscape.
Demonstrate your organizing philosophy: include examples of how you've mobilized people, whether in a paid role or as a volunteer. Be specific about your methods and outcomes.
Since it's a contract-to-hire role, emphasize your flexibility and willingness to start on a contract basis, and your long-term interest in growing with the organization.
Tailor your resume to emphasize skills like base-building, leadership development, and campaign work, rather than just listing job duties. Use action verbs and quantify your impact where possible.
In your cover letter, address why rural Utah is a priority for you and how you'd approach building relationships in those communities. Mention your comfort with remote work and self-direction.
โ๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter
['Your deep connection to Utah, especially rural areas, and your understanding of the issues facing these communities.', "Your experience in organizing or community leadership, even if informal, and how you've successfully brought people together around a cause.", 'Your motivation for wanting to work specifically with UTST, referencing their past successes (like delivering federal funds) and your alignment with their campaign focus areas.', 'Your ability to work independently and manage your own schedule, as the role is remote and statewide.']
Generate Cover Letter โ๐ Research Before Applying
To stand out, make sure you've researched:
- โ Look up UTST's website and any news articles about their recent campaigns in Utah to understand their current priorities and successes.
- โ Research the specific issues in rural Utah related to healthcare, jobs, clean energy, and affordability to speak knowledgeably in your application.
- โ Familiarize yourself with key partners they mention: labor unions, community organizations, tribal leaders, and local elected officials. Maybe check out social media or public statements.
- โ Understand the political landscape of Utah, including recent legislative sessions and grassroots movements, to show you're plugged in.
๐ฌ Prepare for These Interview Topics
Based on this role, you may be asked about:
โ ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Don't submit a generic application that could be for any organizing job. This role requires specific Utah knowledge and passionโmake that obvious.
- Avoid focusing only on your resume; instead, emphasize your relational skills and ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Don't underestimate the rural component. If you're not from a rural area, don't ignore itโacknowledge the challenge and explain how you'd approach it.
