About the Role

Human Rights First is seeking a dedicated individual to assist in administering its pro bono asylum legal representation work.

Responsibilities

• Assist in administering Human Rights First's pro bono asylum legal representation work, including identifying cases for direct representation and pro bono placement
• Provide direct representation of asylum seekers in various legal proceedings, including immigration court, USCIS, ICE, and federal district courts
• Mentor law firm attorneys providing representation in affirmative and defensive asylum cases, providing legal and procedural support
• Build and maintain relationships with local law firms, corporations, law school clinics, and volunteer attorneys to promote pro bono representation

This role creates positive change by providing high-quality legal representation to asylum seekers, mentoring volunteer attorneys to expand pro bono services, and advocating for improved access to legal representation for vulnerable immigrant populations.

Required qualifications:

• U.S. law degree (J.D.) and active bar membership required
• Staff Attorney: At least two years of experience representing asylum seekers at all levels of the administrative process, including immigration court experience
• Senior Staff Attorney: At least five years of experience representing asylum seekers at all levels of the administrative process, including immigration court experience
• Extensive knowledge of U.S. immigration law and policy
• Fluency in Spanish strongly preferred; additional languages a plus

Salary ranges:

• Staff Attorney: $78,000-$84,000
• Senior Staff Attorney: $85,000-$95,000

Additional benefits include mileage reimbursement for regional travel to USCIS offices, immigration courts, and detention facilities.
