How to Apply for Specialist & Expert Advocate - Homebased in Scotland

at Aafda

🏢 About Aafda

AAFDA is a unique charity founded by a family member directly impacted by domestic homicide, creating an organization with deep personal understanding and commitment. Unlike generic advocacy groups, AAFDA specializes exclusively in supporting families after fatal domestic abuse through peer support and expert advocacy during statutory reviews. Working here means contributing to a growing organization that fills a critical gap in support services for traumatized families.

About This Role

This homebased Specialist & Expert Advocate will be AAFDA's first dedicated representative in Scotland, preparing for and implementing support services ahead of Scotland's Domestic Homicide and Suicide Reviews starting in April 2026. The role involves providing specialist advocacy to families impacted by fatal domestic abuse, navigating the Scottish legislative system, and building AAFDA's presence in Scotland through some travel. This position is impactful because you'll be establishing essential support structures before Scotland's new review system begins, ensuring families have expert guidance during their most difficult times.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day involves remote case management for Scottish families impacted by domestic homicide, preparing them for upcoming statutory reviews through virtual meetings and detailed guidance. You might research specific aspects of Scottish legislation relevant to a family's case, coordinate with AAFDA's wider team on cross-border issues, and potentially travel for in-person meetings with families or stakeholders as Scotland's review system develops.

🎯 Who Aafda Is Looking For

  • Has direct experience with domestic abuse (either professional or personal, as explicitly welcomed in the job description)
  • Demonstrates strong understanding of Scottish legislative systems and how they intersect with domestic abuse cases
  • Possesses advocacy experience, particularly in trauma-informed support or statutory review processes
  • Is comfortable with remote work but willing to travel within Scotland as needed for casework and relationship-building

4
