How to Apply for Solutions Architect Deployment Strategist
at Planet
๐ข About Planet
Planet uniquely combines space technology with data analytics, operating the world's largest constellation of Earth-imaging satellites. They control the entire pipeline from satellite design to cloud-based data delivery, creating a rare opportunity to work at the intersection of hardware, software, and real-world impact. Their mission to 'use space to help life on Earth' attracts professionals who want their technical work to address global challenges in environmental monitoring, defense, and humanitarian efforts.
About This Role
As a Solutions Architect Deployment Strategist for Planet's Defense & Intelligence customers, you'll be responsible for integrating Planet's satellite data platform into specialized government systems and workflows. This role directly enables national security and intelligence agencies to leverage timely Earth observation data for critical decision-making, requiring both technical expertise in cloud deployments and understanding of defense sector requirements.
๐ก A Day in the Life
You might start your day reviewing integration requirements from a defense agency, then spend the morning architecting a secure data pipeline using Golang to connect Planet's API with classified systems. In the afternoon, you could be troubleshooting a PostgreSQL performance issue for satellite metadata queries, followed by a planning session with the Professional Services team on deploying Planet's platform in Azure Government Cloud for a new intelligence customer.

Tailor your resume to show progression in cloud deployment complexity across GCP, AWS, or Azure, especially for classified or sensitive data systems
Research and reference specific Planet products like their satellite constellations or platform features that could benefit D&I missions
Emphasize any experience with Earth observation data, geospatial systems, or remote sensing technologiesโeven if tangential
โ๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter
['Your direct experience supporting Defense/Intelligence customers with technical integration challenges and measurable outcomes', "Specific examples of cloud deployments (GCP/AWS/Azure) you've architected for secure, government-facing applications", 'How your Golang/Python/PostgreSQL/React skills have solved real problems in data-intensive systems', "Why Planet's mission to 'use space to help life on Earth' resonates with you, particularly in the defense and intelligence context"]
Generate Cover Letter โ๐ Research Before Applying
To stand out, make sure you've researched:
- โ Planet's specific satellite constellations (like SkySat, Dove) and their technical specifications, imaging capabilities, and revisit rates
- โ Planet's existing government contracts and partnerships (check their blog, press releases, and government procurement databases)
- โ The Planet Platform's API documentation and developer tools to understand how customers access and integrate their data
- โ Current challenges in defense/intelligence where Earth observation data is critical (disaster response, border monitoring, infrastructure assessment)
๐ฌ Prepare for These Interview Topics
Based on this role, you may be asked about:
โ ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Applying with generic cloud or software engineering experience without highlighting Defense/Intelligence sector specifics
- Failing to address the security clearance requirement or assuming it's not important in early application materials
- Using only commercial examples in your portfolio when this role specifically requires government/defense integration experience
