How to Apply for Software Engineering Intern (Dispatch – Map Building)

at Glydways

🏢 About Glydways

Glydways is pioneering net-negative greenhouse gas autonomous transportation systems, focusing on affordable and eco-friendly mobility solutions. Unlike traditional transportation companies, they're building from the ground up with sustainability as a core engineering constraint, offering the chance to work on cutting-edge infrastructure that actively reduces environmental impact.

About This Role

This internship involves leading development of an interactive dispatch mapping tool for autonomous transportation networks, enabling users to visually design stations, junctions, and paths that feed directly into simulation systems. You'll create intuitive editing workflows and integrate simulation data to enable rapid 'what-if' analysis, directly impacting how Glydways plans and optimizes their transportation networks.

💡 A Day in the Life

You might start by reviewing simulation output integration with the mapping tool, then implement new drag-and-drop features for station configuration, followed by writing unit tests for path connectivity validation. The day could end with a design discussion about optimizing the user workflow for rapid scenario exploration.

🎯 Who Glydways Is Looking For

  • Has hands-on experience building interactive visualization tools (web or desktop) with drag-and-drop interfaces and real-time feedback
  • Understands spatial systems and network modeling concepts including graph representations, path connectivity, and basic optimization relevant to transportation networks
  • Can demonstrate production-quality coding in at least one of C++, TypeScript, or Python with experience in testing and documentation
  • Shows interest in translating operational questions into technical solutions for transportation or mapping applications

📝 Tips for Applying to Glydways

1

Showcase a portfolio piece demonstrating interactive mapping or visualization tools - include GitHub links or live demos

2

Highlight any coursework or projects involving graph theory, spatial data, or network optimization, specifically mentioning transportation applications if possible

3

Tailor your resume to emphasize experience with UI/UX for technical tools rather than consumer applications

4

Demonstrate understanding of the full development cycle by mentioning testing (unit/integration) and documentation practices

5

Research Glydways' specific transportation approach and mention how your skills align with their net-negative GHG mission

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Explain your experience with interactive tool development and how it applies to mapping/network visualization', 'Describe your understanding of spatial systems and graph theory in the context of transportation networks', 'Connect your technical skills (C++/TypeScript/Python) to building production-quality tools with testing', "Express specific interest in Glydways' mission of net-negative GHG transportation and how this role contributes"]

🔍 Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • Study Glydways' transportation system architecture and understand their guideway network concept
  • Research autonomous transportation dispatch systems and current industry challenges
  • Look into net-negative GHG technologies and how they apply to transportation infrastructure
  • Review any public technical talks or papers from Glydways engineers about their simulation systems

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 Walk through your approach to designing drag-and-drop interfaces for spatial elements (stations, paths, junctions)
2 Explain how you would structure graph data for a transportation network and handle connectivity validation
3 Discuss your experience with integrating simulation outputs into visualization tools
4 Describe your testing strategy for interactive mapping tools and handling edge cases
5 Explain how you would collaborate to translate operational questions into technical solutions
