Software Engineer - Scientific Platforms

Core responsibilities:

• Design and implement backend services and REST APIs that integrate lab operations with bioinformatics pipelines
• Own data modelling and persistence including schema design, migrations, indexing, and query performance
• Build job execution patterns for long-running analysis workflows with queue-based execution and async workers
• Integrate with cloud storage and compute systems, particularly GCP services

This role creates positive change by building the platform layer that makes scientific work scalable and repeatable, supporting Tropic's mission to develop high-performing tropical crops that address food security and sustainability challenges globally.

Required qualifications:

• 3-6+ years' experience building and operating backend services in production
• Strong backend skills in Python (FastAPI/Flask/Django) and API design
• Strong PostgreSQL experience including schema design, migrations, and performance tuning
• Experience with async workloads, task queues, background workers, and event-driven design
