Senior Research Associate - Sea Ice

Core responsibilities:

• Provide technical project management and leadership for research projects, ensuring successful outcomes
• Lead the development of observationally driven AI models for sea ice forecasting systems for Arctic and Antarctic resilience
• Take the lead on writing up findings, producing reports, and developing publications in peer reviewed journals
• Lead on the preparation of proposals and applications to external bodies for funding and contractual purposes

This role contributes to enhancing the accuracy, resolution, and lead time of sea ice forecasts to support critical areas such as climate research, polar operations, biodiversity conservation, and maritime navigation, ultimately helping to develop AI as a transformative technology to benefit planet and people.

Required qualifications:

• A PhD (or equivalent experience/qualifications) in a relevant area such as machine learning, AI, computer science, mathematics, statistics, physics, engineering, or environmental science
• Experience in machine learning and deep learning
• Programming skills with proficiency in Python and ML libraries such as PyTorch or TensorFlow
• Experience working with geospatial data, remote sensing, or reanalysis datasets

Annual salary is £56,840 plus excellent benefits including flexible working and family friendly policies. The position is offered on a fixed-term basis for 2 years.
