How to Apply for Senior Product Manager

at Playlab

๐Ÿข About Playlab

Playlab is a tech non-profit uniquely focused on empowering educators and students to become critical consumers and creators of AI through an open-source, community-driven platform. With over 60,000 educators already publishing apps, it offers a mission-driven environment where you can directly shape the future of AI in education. Working here means contributing to equitable, creative futures for learners, not just building products for profit.

About This Role

As the first dedicated Product Manager at Playlab, you will have high ownership over defining and executing the product strategy, including expanding platform capabilities beyond chatbots, deepening user context through knowledge graphs, and setting safety standards for responsible AI. This hands-on role is pivotal in translating the companyโ€™s mission into tangible features that impact thousands of educators and students daily.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

Your day might start with a stand-up with the engineering team to discuss progress on a new component feature, followed by user research interviews with educators testing a prototype. Afternoon could involve analyzing usage data from knowledge graphs, drafting product specs for a safety dashboard, and collaborating with the community manager on a feedback survey. Youโ€™ll end the day reviewing PRs for documentation updates and planning the next sprint.

๐ŸŽฏ Who Playlab Is Looking For

  • Experienced in product management for developer-facing or platform products, with a strong technical background to understand AI/ML concepts and APIs.
  • Passionate about education technology and social impact, with a clear vision for how AI can be used responsibly in classrooms.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and high ownership, able to drive strategy from concept to launch in a fast-paced, resource-constrained non-profit environment.
  • Skilled in user research and data-driven decision making, with experience working directly with educators or in community-driven product development.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Playlab

1

Highlight any experience with open-source projects or community-driven product development, as Playlab values community input highly.

2

Showcase your understanding of AI safety and responsible AI practices, especially in educational contexts.

3

Tailor your resume to emphasize product launches that involved platform capabilities (e.g., APIs, components, agents) rather than just consumer apps.

4

Include concrete examples of how you've used user research to inform product decisions, especially with non-technical users like educators.

5

Demonstrate familiarity with Playlabโ€™s current product by mentioning specific features or suggesting improvements in your cover letter.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Express genuine passion for education equity and how AI can empower teachers and students.', 'Describe your experience with platform or developer tools, emphasizing your ability to balance technical complexity with user simplicity.', 'Explain why you want to be the first PM at a non-profit, highlighting your comfort with high ownership and mission-driven work.', 'Mention specific ideas for expanding Playlabโ€™s capabilities (e.g., multimodal agents, curriculum integration) to show strategic thinking.']

  • โ†’ Look into similar edtech non-profits (e.g., Khan Academy, Code.org) to understand the competitive landscape.
  • โ†’ Check recent news or publications about AI in education policy to align your interview responses with current trends.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 How would you prioritize features for a platform that serves both novice educators and advanced developers?
2 Describe a time you had to balance technical feasibility with user needs in a resource-constrained environment.
3 What is your approach to setting safety standards for AI tools used by children?
4 How would you measure success for Playlabโ€™s product beyond usage metrics?
5 How would you gather feedback from a community of 60,000+ educators to inform the product roadmap?
