How to Apply for Senior Director, Talent Acquisition and Management

at Solar Landscape

๐Ÿข About Solar Landscape

Solar Landscape is a mission-driven company transforming commercial rooftops into community solar gardens, directly lowering energy costs for underserved communities and reducing carbon emissions. As a high-growth leader in renewable energy, they offer a unique opportunity to build a talent function that powers a sustainable future.

About This Role

As Senior Director of Talent Acquisition and Management, you will own the end-to-end hiring strategy for a rapidly scaling company, partnering directly with C-suite leaders to forecast needs and build teams across construction, engineering, and corporate functions. Your work will directly impact the company's ability to deploy solar projects and achieve its growth targets.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

Your day might start with a 30-minute stand-up with your recruiting team to review pipeline metrics and open roles, followed by a 1:1 with the COO to discuss headcount forecasts for Q3 construction projects. After lunch, you could review a new sourcing strategy for solar installers, then end the day interviewing a candidate for a senior project manager role.

๐ŸŽฏ Who Solar Landscape Is Looking For

  • Proven track record scaling a recruiting function from 50 to 500+ employees in a high-growth, mission-driven environment (e.g., clean energy, construction, or tech).
  • Deep expertise in hiring for construction and field roles (e.g., project managers, electricians, site supervisors) alongside corporate positions, with a network of passive candidates in renewable energy or related industries.
  • Experience designing data-driven recruiting metrics (e.g., time-to-fill, quality-of-hire, diversity pipeline) and using them to hold teams accountable and influence executive decisions.
  • Strong leadership skills with 3โ€“5+ years managing recruiting teams, including developing managers and coaching recruiters to improve performance.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Solar Landscape

1

In your resume, highlight specific examples of scaling a recruiting function, including headcount growth numbers, hiring funnel improvements, and cost-per-hire reductions.

2

Emphasize any experience with workforce planning in a project-based or seasonal business, as Solar Landscape's hiring may fluctuate with solar installation cycles.

3

Showcase your familiarity with recruiting for construction or skilled tradesโ€”mention any niche sourcing strategies, partnerships with trade schools, or use of platforms like Indeed, Handshake, or local workforce boards.

4

Quantify your impact on diversity hiring, e.g., increased underrepresented candidate slates by X% or improved diversity hire rates by Y%.

5

Tailor your cover letter to mention Solar Landscape's mission of community solar and how your talent strategy can help them expand access to renewable energy.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Your passion for renewable energy and community impactโ€”connect your personal values to Solar Landscape's mission of reducing carbon footprints and lowering energy costs for communities.", 'Your experience building scalable recruiting processes from scratch or revamping them in a high-growth environment, with concrete examples of outcomes.', 'Your ability to partner with executive leadership on workforce planning and headcount forecasting, especially in a fast-paced, project-driven industry.', "Your track record of hiring for diverse roles including construction, engineering, and corporate, and how you've adapted sourcing strategies for each."]

  • โ†’ Check Glassdoor and Indeed for employee reviews to get a sense of company culture, common challenges, and what employees value most.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 Walk me through how you would design a talent acquisition strategy to support Solar Landscape's goal of doubling installations in the next 18 months.
2 Describe a time you had to convince a skeptical executive to invest in a new recruiting process or tool. How did you build the business case?
3 How do you approach workforce planning for a company that relies on project-based construction timelines? Give an example of how you've forecasted hiring needs in a similar environment.
4 Tell me about a time you improved candidate experience in a high-volume hiring scenario. What metrics did you use to measure success?
5 Solar Landscape hires for both field and corporate roles. How would you structure your recruiting team to effectively source and close candidates across these very different talent pools?

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don't submit a generic resume without highlighting renewable energy or construction industry experienceโ€”this role specifically requires deep knowledge in those areas.
  • Avoid vague statements like 'I love recruiting' without backing them up with hard metrics and examples of scaling teams or processes.
  • Don't overlook the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Ensure your application materials and interview answers reflect a commitment to building diverse talent pipelines.
