How to Apply for Senior Data Engineer

at Renewable Energy Systems

🏢 About Renewable Energy Systems

Renewable Energy Systems is a global leader in clean energy, aiming to add 22 GW of new capacity in the next five years. Working here means contributing directly to combating climate change while being part of a company that values innovation and sustainability. The remote-first, UK-based team offers flexibility and a mission-driven culture.

About This Role

As Senior Data Engineer, you will architect and build data pipelines that power enterprise reporting, analytics, and AI/ML initiatives, directly supporting the company's renewable energy expansion. You'll also lead and mentor a data engineering team, driving high performance and engineering excellence in a fast-paced, impact-focused environment.

💡 A Day in the Life

Your day might start with a stand-up with your data engineering team to review pipeline health and prioritize tasks. You'll then architect a new data model for energy generation data in Azure Synapse, followed by a code review of a junior engineer's Python transformation. After lunch, you'll meet with analytics stakeholders to align on data requirements for a new AI/ML model, and end the day by monitoring pipeline performance and adjusting cost optimizations.

🎯 Who Renewable Energy Systems Is Looking For

  • Expert in Microsoft Azure data stack (Fabric, Synapse, Purview, Power BI) with hands-on production experience building enterprise-grade solutions.
  • Strong leader with a track record of managing and mentoring data engineering teams, fostering accountability and innovation.
  • Deep proficiency in SQL and Python for building reliable, real-time data pipelines with robust observability and data quality controls.
  • Passionate about clean energy and motivated to use data engineering to accelerate the global transition to renewable energy.

📝 Tips for Applying to Renewable Energy Systems

1

Highlight specific Azure projects where you architected and delivered production pipelines, mentioning Fabric or Synapse by name.

2

Quantify your leadership impact: e.g., 'Managed a team of 4 engineers, reducing pipeline latency by 30% through code reviews and best practices.'

3

Showcase your experience with data quality and observability tools (e.g., Purview, monitoring dashboards) in your resume or cover letter.

4

Tailor your portfolio or GitHub to include examples of real-time data systems and how they drove business value (e.g., analytics or ML).

5

Mention your passion for renewable energy and how your skills can help achieve the 22 GW target in your cover letter.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Emphasize your leadership experience and how you've driven team performance and innovation.", 'Highlight your expertise in the Microsoft stack, especially Azure Fabric and Synapse, with specific examples.', 'Connect your data engineering work to business impact, such as enabling AI/ML models or improving reporting for sustainability goals.', "Express genuine interest in the company's mission and how your skills can contribute to scaling clean energy."]

🔍 Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • Read about Renewable Energy Systems' current projects and their 22 GW capacity target to understand their scale and priorities.
  • Familiarize yourself with Azure Fabric and its capabilities, as it's a newer platform the company likely uses.
  • Look into the company's sustainability reports or press releases to understand their data-driven initiatives.
  • Check if they have any published case studies or blog posts about their data infrastructure or engineering team.

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 How would you design a data pipeline for real-time monitoring of energy production across multiple wind farms?
2 Describe a time you improved data quality and observability in a production system. What tools and metrics did you use?
3 How do you approach leading a team through a major technology migration (e.g., moving from on-prem to Azure Fabric)?
4 Walk us through how you would evaluate and select a new data tool for the team.
5 How would you ensure cost optimization in Azure Synapse while maintaining performance for enterprise reporting?
