How to Apply for Senior Data Engineer

at Gropyus

🏢 About Gropyus

Gropyus is revolutionizing sustainable construction by integrating innovative technology to create affordable, resource-conserving buildings. Their focus on truly sustainable solutions makes them unique in combining tech innovation with environmental impact. Working here means contributing to tangible solutions for housing and climate challenges.

About This Role

As a Senior Data Engineer in the Data Language team, you'll design data models for architecture/construction domains and transform centralized data for self-service analytics. This role is impactful because you'll directly enable data-driven decisions for sustainable building solutions while leading modernization of their data ecosystem.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day involves collaborating with architecture domain experts to understand data needs, designing or refining data models for construction concepts, implementing data transformations in Python/Spark, and working with the Data Platform team to integrate data flows. You might also review team members' work, optimize queries, and document data governance standards.

🎯 Who Gropyus Is Looking For

  • Has hands-on experience with Python/Kotlin, Postgres/BigQuery, Spark, Graph DB, and AWS/Azure/Kubernetes in production environments
  • Demonstrates ability to formalize complex architecture/construction concepts into data models through previous domain-specific projects
  • Shows experience leading data modernization initiatives including query optimization, schema design, and scaling data ecosystems
  • Possesses strong stakeholder collaboration skills with domain experts and can mentor team members on engineering rigor

📝 Tips for Applying to Gropyus

1

Highlight specific experience with Graph Databases and how you've used them to model complex relationships (relevant to architecture domains)

2

Showcase projects where you formalized domain concepts into data models, especially in construction, architecture, or related fields

3

Demonstrate your experience with both batch (Spark) and real-time data processing in cloud environments (AWS/Azure)

4

Include examples of how you've implemented data quality, governance, and security standards in previous roles

5

Emphasize any experience with sustainable tech or construction industry data, even if tangential

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Your experience designing data models for complex domains (especially if related to architecture/construction)', 'Specific examples of modernizing or scaling data ecosystems with measurable outcomes', 'How your technical skills (Python/Kotlin, Postgres/BigQuery, Spark, Graph DB, AWS/Azure) align with their stack', "Your passion for sustainable technology and how it connects to Gropyus's mission"]

🔍 Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • Gropyus's specific building projects and technologies mentioned in their case studies or news
  • The construction/architecture industry's data challenges and sustainability metrics
  • Their tech blog or engineering culture to understand their approach to data
  • Berlin's sustainable construction initiatives and how Gropyus fits into that ecosystem

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 Walk through how you would design a data model for a specific construction concept (like building materials or energy efficiency)
2 Describe your experience with Graph Databases and when you'd choose them over relational databases
3 How have you implemented data quality and governance standards in previous projects?
4 Explain a time you collaborated with domain experts who weren't technical to understand data needs
5 What approaches have you used for query optimization in large-scale data systems?

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Generic data engineering experience without examples of domain modeling or formalizing concepts
  • Focusing only on technical skills without demonstrating stakeholder collaboration or mentoring experience
  • No examples of implementing data quality/governance standards or leading modernization initiatives
