How to Apply for Senior Data Engineer - Data Platform (m/f/d)
at 1KOMMA5°
🏢 About 1KOMMA5°
1KOMMA5° is on a mission to decarbonize buildings by integrating decentralized clean energy, mobility, and heat supply solutions. As a fast-growing climate tech company, you'll contribute directly to the energy transition while working with cutting-edge IoT and data platforms.
About This Role
As a Senior Data Engineer on the Data Platform team, you'll architect and manage the core data infrastructure that powers real-time energy monitoring, customer insights, and operational efficiency. Your work will enable seamless data ingestion from thousands of distributed energy systems and drive data-driven decisions across the company.
💡 A Day in the Life
Your day might start with a stand-up with the data platform team to discuss progress on building a new data pipeline for real-time energy monitoring. You’ll then dive into writing Terraform scripts to provision a new BigQuery dataset, followed by a collaboration session with product managers to define data requirements for a customer-facing dashboard. In the afternoon, you might troubleshoot a data latency issue and implement monitoring alerts to ensure data reliability.
🚀 Application Tools
🎯 Who 1KOMMA5° Is Looking For
- You have 3+ years of data engineering experience, with a track record of building scalable data pipelines in a cloud-native environment (preferably GCP).
- You are proficient in Python and SQL, and have hands-on experience with Terraform (HCL) for infrastructure-as-code.
- You understand data modeling and transformation at scale (e.g., using dbt, BigQuery, or similar tools) and can ensure data quality and monitoring.
- You thrive in a fast-paced, cross-functional setting and enjoy collaborating with product, analytics, and software teams to understand data needs.
📝 Tips for Applying to 1KOMMA5°
Highlight any experience with real-time data ingestion from IoT devices or energy systems, as this is core to 1KOMMA5°’s platform.
Quantify your impact: e.g., 'Built a pipeline processing 10M events/day with 99.9% uptime' or 'Reduced query latency by 40% via partitioning.'
Show your GCP expertise—mention specific services like BigQuery, Dataflow, Pub/Sub, or Cloud Composer.
If you have experience with renewable energy or climate tech, mention it; passion for the mission is a plus.
Tailor your resume to emphasize data platform architecture, not just ETL; use keywords like 'data platform', 'data ingestion', 'data transformation', and 'data quality'.
✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter
["Explain why you're motivated by 1KOMMA5°’s mission to make buildings CO2-neutral and how your skills can accelerate that.", 'Describe a specific data platform challenge you solved (e.g., scaling ingestion, improving data reliability) and the results.', "Mention your experience with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform) and how you've used it to manage cloud resources efficiently.", 'Show your collaborative approach: how you work with cross-functional teams to translate data needs into technical solutions.']
Generate Cover Letter →🔍 Research Before Applying
To stand out, make sure you've researched:
- → Read 1KOMMA5°’s blog or press releases about their energy management system and IoT platform.
- → Understand their product: they offer hardware (solar, heat pumps) integrated with a smart energy app. How does data enable that?
- → Check their careers page and LinkedIn for recent projects or team structure to understand the data platform's role.
- → Look up their tech stack: they use GCP, so familiarize yourself with their specific services (e.g., BigQuery, Dataflow, Pub/Sub).
💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics
Based on this role, you may be asked about:
⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Submitting a generic application without mentioning 1KOMMA5° or the specific role—personalization is key.
- Overemphasizing tools without showing impact or architectural thinking; focus on outcomes, not just skills.
- Ignoring data quality and monitoring; these are explicitly mentioned in the job description, so be sure to address them.
