About This Role

As a Senior Commissioning Engineer, you will provide technical expertise across a portfolio of transmission, distribution, substation, and renewable energy projects across the UK. This role uniquely combines the opportunity to stay hands-on with commissioning activities while working predominantly remotely, with less than 15% travel. You will collaborate with project managers and commissioning teams to ensure successful project delivery, making a direct impact on the reliability and sustainability of the UK's energy infrastructure.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

As a Senior Commissioning Engineer at Hitachi Energy, your day might start with a virtual team meeting to discuss project progress and upcoming commissioning activities. You'll spend much of your time reviewing technical documents, developing commissioning plans, and providing remote support to on-site teams via phone or video calls. When needed, you'll travel to sites for critical phases, but most weeks you'll enjoy the flexibility of working from home, with occasional site visits to ensure everything runs smoothly.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to HITACHI ENERGY

1

1. Tailor your CV to highlight specific commissioning projects you've led, especially those involving substations, renewables, or grid connections. Quantify your achievements (e.g., 'commissioned 3 substations on time and within budget').

2

2. In your cover letter, explicitly address the remote aspect: explain how you've successfully worked remotely or managed projects across different sites without being physically present.

3

3. Research Hitachi Energy's recent projects in the UK, such as their involvement in offshore wind grid connections or HVDC links, and mention relevant experience or interest in these areas.

4

4. Emphasize your knowledge of industry standards such as IEC 61850, grid codes, and safety regulations (e.g., CDM, ENA G81) in your application.

5

5. Since the role is remote, demonstrate your proficiency with digital collaboration tools (e.g., Teams, Zoom, project management software) and your ability to self-manage and stay productive without direct supervision.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

โ€ข Highlight your extensive commissioning experience in high-voltage projects and your ability to deliver complex projects to high standards. โ€ข Emphasize your flexibility and adaptability to work remotely while maintaining strong collaboration with on-site teams and clients. โ€ข Show your passion for sustainable energy and how your work contributes to a carbon-neutral future, aligning with Hitachi Energy's mission. โ€ข Mention your strong communication skills and experience in stakeholder management, crucial for a remote role.

๐Ÿ” Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • โ†’ 1. Explore Hitachi Energy's portfolio of projects in the UK, particularly in renewables and grid modernization, to understand their market focus.
  • โ†’ 2. Familiarize yourself with Hitachi Energy's core technologies, such as HVDC, grid automation, and transformer solutions, and how they fit into the energy transition.
  • โ†’ 3. Review the company's commitment to sustainability and their recent initiatives or reports on carbon neutrality to demonstrate your alignment with their values.
  • โ†’ 4. Look into the company culture, including their remote work policies and employee testimonials, to understand how they support work-life balance.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 1. Describe a challenging commissioning project you led. How did you ensure successful completion and what was your role in troubleshooting?
2 2. How do you manage commissioning activities when you cannot be physically present on site? Give an example of a time you coordinated with a site team remotely.
3 3. What is your experience with protection relay testing, SCADA, or substation automation? How do you stay current with evolving technologies?
4 4. How do you ensure compliance with safety regulations and quality standards during commissioning, especially when working across multiple sites?
5 5. Why are you interested in working for Hitachi Energy specifically, and how do you align with our mission of advancing sustainable energy?

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • 1. Don't submit a generic CV that doesn't highlight your specific commissioning experience or the scale of projects you've worked on.
  • 2. Avoid downplaying the remote aspect; if you lack experience working remotely, don't ignore itโ€”instead, address how you plan to adapt and succeed.
  • 3. Don't overlook the importance of safety and compliance; make sure to emphasize your knowledge of safety regulations and your track record of working safely.
  • 4. Avoid being vague about your technical skills; be specific about the types of equipment, voltage levels, and testing procedures you've handled.
