How to Apply for Senior Backend Engineer - Ruby on Rails (m/f/d)

at Global Changer

🏢 About Global Changer

Global Changer is a mission-driven platform that accelerates B2B companies toward Net-Zero emissions by automating carbon data collection and analysis. Working here means combining deep technical challenges with meaningful climate impact, backed by a remote-first culture across the EU.

About This Role

As Senior Backend Engineer, you'll own the Corporate Carbon Footprint module end-to-end, from data modeling to API design to background processing. Your work directly enables companies to measure and reduce their carbon footprint at scale, making this role both technically challenging and environmentally impactful.

💡 A Day in the Life

Start your day with a standup covering progress on the CCF module, then dive into designing a new data model for emission factors. You'll review a colleague's PR, optimize a slow query in production, and pair with a product manager to refine API requirements. After lunch, you might write a migration strategy for a new table and end the day by deploying a background job fix.

🎯 Who Global Changer Is Looking For

  • You have 7+ years of backend experience with expert-level Ruby on Rails, including deep knowledge of Rails internals and best practices.
  • You've designed and optimized Postgres schemas for high-volume data, including query tuning, indexing strategies, and zero-downtime migrations.
  • You have a track record of owning complex backend systems in production, making principled trade-offs between speed and technical debt.
  • You are fluent in English and based in the EU (CET ±1) with a valid work permit.

📝 Tips for Applying to Global Changer

1

In your resume, highlight specific Postgres optimizations you've done (e.g., query performance improvements, index design) with quantifiable results.

2

Emphasize experience with background job processing (e.g., Sidekiq) and API design, as these are core to the role.

3

Mention any domain knowledge in sustainability or carbon accounting, even if tangential, to show passion for the company's mission.

4

Tailor your cover letter to address how you've driven architectural decisions and set technical direction in previous roles.

5

Include links to your GitHub or open-source contributions that demonstrate Rails expertise and code quality.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Your deep experience with Ruby on Rails and Postgres at scale, with concrete examples of schema design and optimization.', "How you've owned backend services end-to-end, from data model to deployment.", 'Your ability to lead by example through code reviews and setting technical standards.', 'Your motivation for joining a climate-tech company and how your skills can accelerate their mission.']

🔍 Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • Understand the basics of Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF) and the GHG Protocol to speak the domain language.
  • Read about Global Changer's platform and how they automate data collection from various sources.
  • Check their engineering blog or tech talks (if any) to understand their tech stack and culture.
  • Research their competitors in the carbon accounting space to see how Global Changer differentiates.

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 Design a scalable data model for tracking corporate carbon footprints across multiple emission scopes.
2 How would you optimize a slow ActiveRecord query joining several large tables? Walk through indexing and query restructuring.
3 Describe a time you had to refactor a critical Rails codebase under time pressure. How did you manage technical debt?
4 How would you handle a live migration on a large Postgres table with zero downtime?
5 What background job strategies would you use for processing large datasets of emissions data, and how would you ensure reliability?

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don't focus solely on Rails features without mentioning data-heavy or scalability experience, as this role is data-intensive.
  • Avoid generic statements about being a 'team player' without concrete examples of leading technical decisions.
  • Don't ignore the mission – failing to express genuine interest in climate tech can hurt your application.
