๐Ÿข About Mercy Corps

Mercy Corps is a leading global humanitarian organization that partners with communities in over 30 countries to build resilient communities through innovative solutions. Working here means being part of a mission-driven team that tackles complex challenges, from emergency response to long-term development, with a strong commitment to accountability and safeguarding.

About This Role

As the Safeguarding Advisor for East Africa, you will provide technical leadership to prevent and respond to safeguarding issues across multiple country programs. Your work will directly protect vulnerable populations, strengthen local systems, and ensure Mercy Corps meets the highest standards of safety and ethics in its operations.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

A typical day might involve reviewing safeguarding incident reports from country teams, providing remote guidance on case management, and developing training materials for an upcoming regional workshop. You might also join a proposal design meeting to ensure safeguarding risks are budgeted and integrated, followed by a check-in with a country safeguarding focal point on their core standards rollout.

๐ŸŽฏ Who Mercy Corps Is Looking For

  • Experienced in safeguarding, gender-based violence, or child protection within humanitarian or development contexts in East Africa.
  • Deep knowledge of donor and sector-wide safeguarding standards (e.g., CHS, PSEA) and ability to operationalize them.
  • Strong training and capacity-building skills to support country teams in implementing safeguarding core standards.
  • Proven ability to assess risks, develop mitigation plans, and integrate safeguarding into program proposals and budgets.
