Private Lands Wildlife Forester

Core responsibilities:

• Work with partners to promote forest management for priority wildlife species by following best management practices
• Identify and contact private landowners with forest management opportunities, conduct site visits, and provide technical assistance including conservation plan development
• Complete all aspects of forest habitat management including boundary layout, GPS surveying, data collection, forest inventory, prescription development, and project oversight
• Monitor and track project activities using electronic databases and GIS, and assist with species monitoring and reporting

This role implements sustainable forest management on private lands to benefit priority wildlife species, particularly birds, while also supporting human communities, biodiversity, and climate resilience through habitat conservation and restoration.

Required qualifications:

• Associate's degree in forestry/wildlife/conservation field plus 2 years experience OR bachelor's/master's degree in related field
• Experience identifying tree species across age classes and seasons, and knowledge of NRCS programs and landowner incentive programs
• Valid driver's license and experience navigating unpaved/off-road conditions
• Experience working with private landowners and public agencies (NRCS, WV DNR, USFWS, USDA Forest Service)
