How to Apply for Operations Specialist (f/m/x)

at IONITY

🏢 About IONITY

IONITY is a joint venture between major automotive manufacturers, building the largest high-power charging network for electric vehicles across Europe. With a mission to make long-distance EV travel as convenient as refueling a conventional car, the company operates over 400 charging stations with 1,700+ chargers, emphasizing reliability and sustainability. Working here means contributing to the backbone of Europe's EV infrastructure revolution.

About This Role

As an Operations Specialist, you'll ensure the IONITY HPC network maintains >99% uptime by monitoring performance, troubleshooting technical issues, and driving continuous improvement. Your work directly impacts driver satisfaction and the adoption of electric mobility by keeping chargers operational and reliable. It's a hands-on, analytical role bridging field operations and engineering teams.

💡 A Day in the Life

Start by checking the monitoring dashboard for overnight alerts, then prioritize incidents based on severity. You'll spend time analyzing logs from a few malfunctioning chargers, coordinating with a field technician for a site visit, and updating the ticketing system. Later, you'll join a cross-team call to discuss a recurring software bug and propose a workaround, ending the day by summarizing key metrics for the weekly ops report.

🎯 Who IONITY Is Looking For

  • Has a degree in electrical engineering, IT, or equivalent technician qualification with deep knowledge of power electronics and charging protocols (e.g., CCS, CHAdeMO).
  • Possesses 3+ years of experience in operating or supporting large-scale technical networks, ideally EV charging infrastructure or similar (e.g., telecom, renewable energy).
  • Is data-driven, comfortable analyzing KPIs like uptime, mean time to repair, and utilization, using tools like SQL or Excel to identify trends and root causes.
  • Thrives in a remote, cross-functional environment, able to coordinate with field service teams, suppliers, and software engineers to resolve complex issues.

📝 Tips for Applying to IONITY

1

Highlight specific experience with high-power charging systems (350kW+) or similar power electronics (e.g., inverters, grid connections).

2

Quantify your impact in previous roles: e.g., 'Improved network uptime from 95% to 99% by implementing proactive monitoring.'

3

Tailor your CV to show familiarity with IONITY's network: mention specific stations or technologies (e.g., HPC 350kW, CCS).

4

Include examples of troubleshooting complex technical issues, especially those requiring escalation and cross-team coordination.

5

Demonstrate remote work readiness: mention tools you've used (Jira, Slack, remote monitoring software) and how you stay productive.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Your passion for electric mobility and IONITY's mission to make EV travel seamless.", 'Your technical expertise in charging infrastructure, power electronics, or similar critical networks.', 'Your analytical approach to problem-solving, using data to drive operational improvements.', 'Your ability to work autonomously in a remote environment while collaborating effectively with distributed teams.']

🔍 Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • Study IONITY's network map and recent press releases about expansions or partnerships (e.g., with Tesla, Enel).
  • Understand the competitive landscape: compare IONITY's HPC network with Tesla Supercharger, Fastned, etc.
  • Familiarize yourself with common charging standards: CCS, CHAdeMO, and upcoming Megawatt Charging System (MCS).
  • Review IONITY's sustainability goals and how operations contribute to reducing carbon footprint.

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 Walk us through how you would troubleshoot a charger that is reporting 'communication error' and not initiating charge.
2 How do you prioritize multiple operational issues? Describe a time you had to balance uptime vs. cost.
3 Explain how you would analyze a dip in network uptime using KPIs and what actions you'd take.
4 Describe your experience with OCPP or other charging protocols. How do you ensure interoperability?
5 How do you stay updated on EV charging standards and technologies? Give an example of applying new knowledge.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Focusing only on hardware without showing understanding of software/IT aspects (e.g., network protocols, remote monitoring).
  • Providing vague answers about technical issues instead of specific examples with root cause analysis and resolution steps.
  • Underestimating the importance of data analysis: failing to mention KPIs, dashboards, or reporting in your experience.
