About Evergreen Action
Evergreen Action (Evergreen) is leading the fight to put bold climate action at the top of America’s agenda. They’re building the ambitious, actionable policy roadmap for an all-out mobilization to defeat climate change—and to create millions of jobs in a thriving, just, and inclusive clean energy future.
Evergreen was founded in 2020 by a group of former Inslee for America staffers and supporters who came together with a mission to build an all-out national mobilization to defeat the climate crisis and create millions of jobs in a clean energy economy.
When Governor Inslee left the presidential race, he made his 218-page “gold standard” policy plan into an open-source document. It lives on today as the Evergreen Action Plan, a comprehensive roadmap for this national mobilization: investing in and building both a thriving clean-energy economy that strengthens communities and a future rooted in justice and economic inclusion.
Today, Evergreen combines movement partnerships with direct advocacy to deliver the greatest positive impact, as fast as possible. They mix bold policy products with campaign-style communications and shrewd advocacy tactics. And it’s working. Read the latest impact report.
Since Evergreen was founded, they have successfully influenced the U.S. climate policy landscape. They played a pivotal role in the passage and implementation of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), helped set critical federal standards on pollution, and aided in critical state wins like Michigan’s 2023 100% clean energy standard. Now, under the Trump administration, they are helping states both achieve bold climate progress and defend against attacks on progress, building momentum toward a cross-state climate affordability agenda and renewed climate leadership.
Though the challenges are immense, their work to build a thriving and just clean energy future is just getting started.

The Opportunity
We are seeking a full-time Northeast/Mid-Atlantic Regional Press Secretary to lead communications and media outreach in service of our regional campaign priorities. This role requires someone who is a skilled communicator and thrives in fast-paced environments to cultivate relationships with local press, pitch compelling stories, draft press materials, and drive media engagement, especially when emerging opportunities arise. We anticipate this role will be a balance of proactive campaign planning (50%), relationship building (30%) and rapid-response needs (20%).
Key Responsibilities
Campaign Driven Communications Strategy
-
Design and execute communications strategies in support of Evergreen’s Northeast/Mid-Atlantic regional campaign priorities, with a clear understanding of desired policy and political outcomes
-
Develop communications plans for report and other product rollouts as well as legislative and advocacy campaigns, sequencing tactics, identifying target audiences, and determining the right timing and channels for impact
-
Work closely with the Regional Director, digital campaigner, and regional advocate to align earned media, digital strategy, and advocacy goals under a cohesive regional campaign umbrella
-
Translate policy objectives into strategic communications plans that drive momentum toward legislative wins and climate affordability goals

Proactively identify creative media opportunities that elevate Evergreen’s work
-
Plan and execute press events in coordination with legislators and partners to generate meaningful earned media
-
Maintain consistent communication with in-state allies and partners to ensure alignment, coordination, and shared strategy
Rapid Response & High Pressure Writing
-
Monitor legislative developments and breaking news, particularly during legislative sessions, and quickly draft statements, press releases, talking points, and reactive materials
-
Lead crisis-style communications efforts when unexpected developments arise, responding with clarity, urgency, and strategic precision
-
Produce high-quality written materials under compressed timelines while managing internal approvals and external distribution
Political Acumen & Regional Adaptability
-
Build deep knowledge of the political landscapes across the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic region, particularly Pennsylvania and New York, and tailor messaging to reflect varying state political dynamics
-
Demonstrate strong judgment in navigating political sensitivities, understanding not only what to say, but how and when to say it in different political environments
-
Customize messaging to resonate with state legislators, governors’ offices, advocates, and local media outlets across diverse political contexts
-
Serve as Evergreen’s on-the-ground communications lead in the region, representing the organization in state coalitions and maintaining alignment with in-state allies
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a sharp, politically savvy communications professional who thrives in fast-moving, campaign-style environments. They are an exceptional writer who can produce polished, persuasive materials quickly, whether drafting a same-day statement on breaking legislation or developing a comprehensive media rollout plan for a major policy report.
They bring a strong campaign mindset and instinctively think in terms of goals, audiences, sequencing, and tactics. They understand how earned media advances legislative and advocacy objectives and know how to design strategies that move decision-makers, not just generate headlines.
The ideal candidate has experience navigating state-level political environments and understands the nuances of working with governors’ offices, state legislators, and regional press corps. Experience in Pennsylvania and New York, particularly with the press corps in both states, is highly valued. More broadly, they have demonstrated success building relationships with state reporters and cutting through a crowded media landscape with creativity and persistence.
While climate or energy experience is a plus, it is not required. What matters most is their ability to quickly get up to speed on complex issues and translate them into compelling narratives with political awareness and precision.
They are proactive, collaborative, and comfortable serving as Evergreen’s on-the-ground communications lead in the region. They take initiative to build relationships, stay in close contact with partners, and ensure allies are aligned and never caught off guard. Above all, they are deeply motivated by Evergreen’s mission and energized by the urgency of advancing and defending bold climate action at the state level.
