The School for Moral Ambition (SMA) helps people turn their ideals into action. We run fellowships, community programs, and campaigns that empower talented people to work on the worldâs most pressing problems. From ending factory farming to fighting the tobacco industry and advancing tax fairness.
We believe that moral ambition â the drive to be one of the best, but measured by different standards of success â can become a cultural force. Weâre not driven by guilt, but by enthusiasm: weâre simply excited about making the world a wildly better place.
You can read our founding principles here.
## about the role
Weâre looking for a Marketing Manager to help more people discover and understand SMAâs work. Youâll run campaigns, manage our social channels, and create clear, honest stories about what we do and why it matters. Your job is to help people see the mission and choose to take part in it.
## Key responsibilities
**Campaign Management & Execution**
• Plan, manage, and execute marketing campaigns across social, email, events, and partnerships.
• Coordinate creative production (copy, design, video, paid, etc.) to deliver assets on time.
• Build campaign timelines, briefs, and KPI dashboards; learn, measure, iterate.
â
**Social Media & Community Growth**
• Write and edit copy for newsletters, social posts, scripts, landing pages, ads, and event promo.
• Manage the content calendar across SMAâs and Rutger Bregmanâs channels, and specific campaigns.
• Co-manage day-to-day operations of SMAâs social presence (Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube Shorts).
• Identify content opportunities, trends, and storytelling moments that grow the movement.
â
**Small Donor Fundraising & Retention**
• Set up and manage recurring donor flows, including onboarding, stewardship, and retention journeys for small donors.
• Lead email outreach for small donor fundraising, from campaign planning and copy to execution and follow-up.
• Evaluate and improve donor acquisition and retention, using data and experimentation to strengthen conversion, engagement, and lifetime value.
â
**Event & Program Support**
• Support marketing for flagship initiatives: Moral Ambition Fellowships (EU + US)Â , fundraising events, podcast launches, and community activations.
• Craft messaging and funnels that drive program applications, RSVPs, conversions, and donor engagement.
â
**Cross-Team Collaboration**
• Work closely with Fundraising, Community, and Fellowship teams to ensure alignment.
• Support donor-facing communication and storytelling when needed.
## What Weâre looking for
• **3â6 years** in marketing, social, content, or communications.
• **A strong writer** who can explain complicated ideas in a simple, human way.
• **Someone organized and reliable** â able to run a project from start to finish.
• **Comfortable working in a fast, sometimes uncertain environment.**
• **Someone who cares about the mission** and wants their work to matter.
• **Experience with social growth**, content creation, or building something from scratch is a plus.
â
We value talent and a can-do attitude above traditional credentials. Even if you donât meet every requirement, and especially if you think we might oversee an aspect that might make you a good fit, we welcome you to challenge us and apply. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and non-traditional career paths. If you have any questions or uncertainties about the role, reach out to us directly.
## What we offer
• **Competitive salary of $70,000â$100,000** annually, based on fulltime employment.
• **Work with a world-class team** led by Rutger Bregman and top talent from tech, media, and philanthropy.
• **24/7 accessible offices** in FiDi, New York and the Zuidas, Amsterdam.
• **A self-managing environment** with clear roles, autonomy, and structure. We care about documentation, scalability, and automation, in line with the Action principle in Moral Ambition.
• **The chance to help build a generational movement** and reshape how young people think about their careers, impact, and moral ambition.**â**
• **A lot of fun.** As we tried to convey in our founding principles: âWeâre not driven by feelings of guilt, but by sheer enthusiasm. Weâre simply excited about making the world a wildly better place, and about building a legacy that matters.â
