How to Apply for U.S Operations Intern

at Kivaorg

🏢 About Kivaorg

Kiva.org is a nonprofit that leverages crowdfunding to expand financial access to underserved communities globally. Its unique model connects individual lenders with borrowers, creating a personal and impactful lending experience. Working here means contributing to a mission-driven team that prioritizes social impact over profit.

About This Role

As a U.S. Operations Intern, you'll be the bridge between Kiva and its U.S. borrowers, reviewing loan applications, supporting borrowers through fundraising, and managing delinquency. This role offers hands-on experience in microfinance operations and a chance to improve real-world processes that directly affect borrowers' success.

💡 A Day in the Life

You might start your day by reviewing a queue of new loan applications, checking for completeness and fraud flags. Then, you'd make a series of phone calls to borrowers who are behind on payments, offering support and creating repayment plans. In the afternoon, you could collaborate with the team to test a new automated reminder system, documenting results and suggesting tweaks.

🎯 Who Kivaorg Is Looking For

  • A detail-oriented critical thinker who can spot inconsistencies in loan applications and ensure compliance.
  • An empathetic communicator comfortable making phone calls and sending texts to borrowers, often in sensitive financial situations.
  • A proactive problem-solver who can manage delinquent accounts and create actionable recovery plans.
  • A process-improvement enthusiast who enjoys piloting new tools and workflows to enhance operational efficiency.

📝 Tips for Applying to Kivaorg

1

Highlight any experience with microfinance, lending, or customer support in underserved communities.

2

In your resume, quantify your impact (e.g., 'Reduced processing time by 15% through a new checklist').

3

Tailor your cover letter to mention Kiva's mission of financial inclusion and how your skills align.

4

If you have experience with Salesforce or CRM tools, mention it – it's a plus for operations roles.

5

Show your comfort with phone communication by briefly noting any cold-calling or client outreach experience.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Your passion for Kiva's mission and understanding of the challenges faced by underserved borrowers.", 'Specific examples of your critical thinking and attention to detail in previous roles or projects.', 'Your ability to handle sensitive conversations with empathy and professionalism.', 'Any experience with process improvement or piloting new initiatives, even in academic settings.']

🔍 Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • Read Kiva's annual report to understand their impact metrics and borrower demographics.
  • Explore the Kiva blog or news section for recent updates on U.S. operations or new initiatives.
  • Familiarize yourself with the concept of 'delinquency management' in microfinance and best practices.
  • Look up Kiva's values (e.g., 'We are all in this together') and think of examples where you lived them.

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 Walk me through how you would handle a borrower who is consistently late on payments.
2 Describe a time you identified a flaw in a process and proposed a fix. What was the outcome?
3 How would you prioritize tasks if you have multiple loan applications to review and delinquent accounts to contact?
4 Why microfinance? What draws you to Kiva specifically?
5 How comfortable are you making outbound calls? Give an example of a time you had to persuade someone over the phone.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Submitting a generic cover letter that doesn't mention Kiva or microfinance – it shows lack of interest.
  • Focusing only on your own benefits (e.g., 'I want experience') rather than how you can contribute.
  • Being unprepared to discuss specific examples of critical thinking or process improvement – prepare stories.
