Research Engineer

• Work in one of FAR.AI's research workstreams, developing scalable implementations of machine learning algorithms and using them to run scientific experiments
• Contribute to all aspects of research projects including shaping research direction, analyzing experimental results, and participating in write-ups for peer-reviewed venues
• Collaborate with researchers from different academic labs and research institutions
• Develop research skills through mentorship, code reviews, and self-directed study of machine learning and AI safety

This role contributes to ensuring advanced AI is safe and beneficial for everyone by conducting breakthrough AI safety research, discovering vulnerabilities in frontier models, and developing solutions to mitigate risks like deception and robustness issues.

• Significant software engineering experience or experience applying machine learning methods (evidenced by prior work, open-source contributions, or publications)
• Experience with at least one object-oriented programming language (preferably Python)
• Results-oriented and motivated by impactful research
• Preferred experience with ML frameworks (PyTorch/TensorFlow), NLP/reinforcement learning, distributed systems, publications/open-source contributions, or mathematical foundations

Compensation: $100,000-$190,000/year depending on experience and location. Additional benefits include payment for work-related travel and equipment expenses, and catered lunch and dinner at Berkeley offices.
