How to Apply for Technical Product Manager

at Alxafrica

🏢 About Alxafrica

ALX Africa is a non-profit dedicated to empowering Africa's digital future by providing world-class tech skills training and career acceleration. With a mission to upskill 2 million Africans by 2030, they offer a unique opportunity to make a tangible social impact while working with a passionate, mission-driven team.

About This Role

As a Technical Product Manager, you will lead the development and delivery of tech training products that directly impact thousands of learners across Africa. You'll bridge the gap between educational needs and technology, ensuring our platforms are user-centric, scalable, and aligned with our mission of bridging the digital divide.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day might start with a stand-up with your engineering team to review sprint progress, followed by user research sessions with learners to gather feedback. You'll then analyze product metrics, update stakeholders, and collaborate with content creators to ensure the curriculum meets learner needs, ending with a product roadmap review.

🎯 Who Alxafrica Is Looking For

  • Proven experience in product management, ideally in EdTech or non-profit sectors, with a deep understanding of agile methodologies.
  • Strong technical acumen to collaborate with engineering teams, with a background in software development or data science preferred.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, able to align diverse teams (instructors, engineers, and partners) around a shared product vision.
  • Passion for education and social impact, with a keen understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities in African tech ecosystems.

📝 Tips for Applying to Alxafrica

1

Highlight any experience you have with educational technology or products that serve emerging markets, even if it's a side project.

2

Quantify your impact in previous roles, e.g., 'Launched a feature that increased user engagement by 30%'.

3

Showcase your ability to work with remote, cross-functional teams, as ALX operates across multiple African cities.

4

Tailor your resume to emphasize product strategy, user research, and data-driven decision-making, not just tactical execution.

5

In your cover letter, explicitly mention ALX's mission and how your skills can help achieve their 2030 goal.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Express genuine passion for ALX's mission and the importance of digital skills in Africa.", 'Demonstrate your understanding of the EdTech landscape and the specific needs of African learners.', 'Highlight your experience in building products that are accessible, scalable, and impactful.', 'Show how your leadership style fosters collaboration and innovation within diverse teams.']

  • Look into the broader EdTech landscape in Africa, including competitors and challenges like internet access and device affordability.
  • Understand the non-profit structure and how that might affect product decisions (e.g., budget constraints, social impact focus).

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:
