How to Apply for Financial Analyst - FP&A

at Alu

🏢 About Alu

ALU is a unique higher education institution that redefines learning by focusing on student-led, mission-driven education rather than traditional majors. As a fast-growing, impact-oriented organization in Africa, it offers a chance to work in a dynamic, non-bureaucratic environment where innovation is encouraged. Joining ALU means contributing to a transformative educational model that aims to solve real-world challenges.

About This Role

As a Financial Analyst in the newly established Financial Performance & Reporting team, you will build and manage financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting processes to support ALU's strategic decisions. Your work will directly enable the organization to allocate resources effectively toward its mission of educating African leaders, making this role critical for operational and financial sustainability.

💡 A Day in the Life

Your day might start with a virtual check-in with the finance team to review progress on monthly forecasts. You'll then analyze budget variances, build financial models for new initiatives, and prepare a presentation for the CFO on resource allocation. After lunch, you could collaborate with program managers to understand their financial needs and refine projections, ending the day by documenting process improvements.

🎯 Who Alu Is Looking For

  • Proven experience in financial planning and analysis (FP&A), with strong skills in budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment and thrive in a fast-paced, non-traditional organization.
  • Passion for education and social impact, with a desire to contribute to ALU's mission of developing young African leaders.
  • Excellent communication skills to present complex financial data to non-financial stakeholders and influence decision-making.

📝 Tips for Applying to Alu

1

Tailor your resume to highlight FP&A experience, especially in budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling, with specific examples of impact.

2

In your cover letter, express genuine interest in ALU's mission and mention how your skills can help the organization scale its impact.

3

Since the role is remote, emphasize your self-motivation, time management, and experience with virtual collaboration tools.

4

Research ALU's innovative educational model and mention specific aspects (e.g., student-led learning, mission-driven majors) that resonate with you.

5

Prepare a concise example of how you improved a financial process or drove cost savings in a previous role.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Your alignment with ALU's mission and passion for transforming education in Africa.", 'Specific FP&A achievements, such as building a budget model from scratch or improving forecast accuracy.', 'Your comfort with ambiguity and ability to build processes in a startup-like environment.', "How your analytical skills can support ALU's goal of financial sustainability and growth."]
