How to Apply for Infectious Prevention and Control (IPC) Outbreak Nurse – Register

at UK-Med

🏢 About UK-Med

UK-Med is a frontline medical aid charity born from the NHS, with over 30 years of experience delivering healthcare in crises. The organization uniquely combines NHS expertise with rapid-response capability, deploying teams to outbreaks and disasters worldwide. Working here means contributing to a mission-driven team that saves lives in the most challenging environments.

About This Role

As an IPC Outbreak Nurse on the Register, you will be on standby to deploy to outbreak responses, where you'll assess IPC practices, identify gaps, and implement improvement plans in healthcare facilities and communities. This role directly strengthens health systems and protects both patients and staff during emergencies, making a tangible impact on outbreak control.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day might start with a morning briefing with the outbreak response team, followed by visits to healthcare facilities to observe IPC practices. You’ll conduct assessments, provide on-the-spot training to staff, and draft improvement plans, often adapting to changing outbreak dynamics and resource constraints.

🎯 Who UK-Med Is Looking For

  • An experienced IPC Nurse with a strong background in outbreak preparedness and response, ideally in humanitarian, emergency, or low-resource settings.
  • Holds a current nursing license and unconditional registration with a recognized professional body, plus a recognized nursing qualification.
  • Flexible and ready to travel internationally at short notice for deployments of at least six weeks; French language skills are a distinct advantage.
  • Comfortable working alongside diverse national and international teams, with a practical, hands-on approach to improving IPC systems.

📝 Tips for Applying to UK-Med

1

Highlight specific outbreak response experience (e.g., Ebola, COVID-19, cholera) and quantify your impact, such as reduced infection rates or number of facilities supported.

2

Emphasize your ability to work in low-resource settings—mention examples of improvising with limited supplies or adapting WHO guidelines to local contexts.

3

If you have French language skills, state your proficiency level explicitly (e.g., conversational, fluent) and provide examples of using French in professional settings.

4

Tailor your CV to show readiness for short-notice travel: list previous international deployments, relevant training (e.g., HEAT), and current passport/visa status.

5

In your cover letter, link your IPC expertise directly to UK-Med’s mission and values—show you understand their NHS roots and humanitarian focus.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Applying without demonstrating specific outbreak IPC experience—generic infection control roles may not suffice; be explicit about outbreak responses.
  • Underestimating the deployment commitment: failing to mention your readiness for short-notice travel and six-week minimum deployments can hurt your application.
  • Ignoring the humanitarian context: avoid a purely clinical focus; show understanding of working in resource-limited, often insecure environments.
