How to Apply for Grow Pillar Lead
at Acumen
🏢 About Acumen
Acumen is unique for its pioneering approach to investing in early-stage clean energy solutions specifically for low-income communities, blending venture capital discipline with deep social impact. Working here means being at the forefront of solving energy poverty while building sustainable businesses that can scale to impact millions globally, particularly in Africa.
About This Role
As the Grow Pillar Lead, you'll be responsible for designing and executing the strategy to support Entrepreneurial Support Organizations (ESOs) across multiple African countries, directly enabling clean energy entrepreneurs to scale. This role is impactful because you'll shape how early-stage energy ventures receive critical support, directly influencing Acumen's ability to achieve its Green RISE Africa objectives of widespread clean energy adoption.
💡 A Day in the Life
A typical day might involve reviewing MEL data from ESOs across different countries to identify trends or issues, leading a virtual co-creation session with a new ESO partner to finalize their work plan, and working with finance colleagues to ensure grant disbursements and reporting are on track. You'll split your time between high-level strategic planning for the pillar and hands-on management of partner relationships and operational details.

🎯 Who Acumen Is Looking For
- Has 8+ years of hands-on experience managing complex, multi-country development programs, preferably with a focus on entrepreneurship, MSME development, or economic development in Africa.
- Possesses deep, practical expertise in designing and implementing Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning (MEL) frameworks for adaptive management, not just reporting.
- Has a proven track record of managing grantee or intermediary relationships (like ESOs), including selection, performance management, and compliant grant administration.
- Is a strategic leader who can both set the vision for the Grow Pillar and oversee its day-to-day delivery across different country contexts and partners.
📝 Tips for Applying to Acumen
Quantify your 8+ years of experience: For each relevant role, specify the number of countries, partners, and grant size you managed to demonstrate 'complex program' leadership.
Tailor your resume to Acumen's language: Use terms like 'Entrepreneurial Support Organizations (ESOs)', 'Grow Pillar', 'Green RISE Africa', and 'adaptive management' to show you understand their specific model.
Provide a concrete example of an MEL framework you designed: Briefly describe one, its key indicators, and how it led to a specific program adaptation or decision.
Highlight any direct experience with clean energy, social enterprise, or impact investing sectors, as this is Acumen's core focus, not just general development.
If you have East Africa (especially Kenya) or multi-country Africa experience, explicitly state this, as the role is based in Kenya and manages activities across the continent.

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics
Based on this role, you may be asked about:
⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Submitting a generic development program manager resume without tailoring it to the specific context of entrepreneurship support, clean energy, and grant management.
- Failing to demonstrate concrete, hands-on MEL experience beyond basic reporting; they need someone who can design frameworks for learning and adaptation.
- Showing a lack of understanding about Acumen's unique model as an impact investor, confusing it with a traditional NGO or grant-making foundation.
