BACKGROUND ON THE ENVIRONMENTAL INTEGRITY PROJECT

The Environmental Integrity Project (EIP) is America’s environmental watchdog. We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting public health and our natural world by holding polluters and government agencies accountable under the law. We advocate for tough but fair environmental standards and empower communities fighting for clean air and water.

Our team of lawyers, analysts, communications staff, and engineers provide support to communities fighting David vs. Goliath battles against some of the biggest polluters in the U.S. We sue not only corporations that don’t follow the law, but also federal and state agencies when they fail to do their jobs protecting the environment.

POSITION OVERVIEW

EIP is accepting applications for a GIS Analyst to join our team working to hold industrial polluters and federal and state agencies accountable for compliance with the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and other environmental laws. Working with EIP’s team of researchers, lawyers and journalists, the GIS Analyst will compile, manage, analyze, visualize and map data related to air and water pollution, environmental justice, industrial infrastructure, and more.

EIP takes legal action to clean up pollution; we publish data-driven reports that push federal and state regulators to better protect public health; and we work with frontline communities to obtain the protections of our environmental laws. This position may require occasional travel. EIP has a headquarters office in Washington, DC and staff working in 17 states. EIP offers flexible work schedules and the option for on-site, hybrid, and remote work.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Compile, organize, analyze, map, and visualize data related to air and water pollution;
- Update databases and websites including Oilandgaswatch.org and Ashtracker.org;
- Develop, update, and/or test informational dashboards and story maps;
- Evaluate and summarize information from public records, permit applications, and related documents;
- Submit public information requests to state and federal government agencies, obtain records, and review responses;
- Assist with fieldwork and case development, as needed;
- Communicate findings and methods to general and technical audiences;
- Research and write reports, fact sheets, memoranda, website content, and other documents; and
- Carry out other tasks and travel as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Four years of relevant professional experience (including internships) and a 4-year college degree or higher in geography, environmental sciences, environmental engineering, political science, public policy, pre-law, public health, or a related field.
  • Proficiency with GIS software like ArcGIS or QGIS. Experience digitizing spatial information from PDF or paper records and with data analytics software packages like R or Python; database management software; accessing data through APIs; and/or building dashboards using Django, RShiny, or Felt are a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365, including Excel, Word, Teams, Outlook, Power Point, and SharePoint.
  • Experience reviewing and analyzing environmental data from public records, permits, and datasets like EPA’s Enforcement and Compliance History Online, emissions inventories, preferred.
  • Excellent analytical, research, writing, organizational, oral communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work remotely as part of a fast-paced, interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability and eagerness to solve problems and learn new software and subject matter quickly.
  • English fluency. Spanish fluency is a plus.
  • Valid US driver’s license.
  • Passion for the environment and advancing environmental justice.
    COMPENSATION

EIP offers competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a supportive working environment. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. For this position, the salary range is $62,000-$82,000 per year.
