How to Apply for Director of Policy & Regulatory Strategy

at TeraWatt Infrastructure

🏢 About TeraWatt Infrastructure

TeraWatt Infrastructure is uniquely positioned as a pure-play EV charging infrastructure company focused exclusively on commercial fleet electrification, not consumer vehicles. They're building the backbone for large-scale fleet transitions with a specialized approach that combines real estate, energy management, and charging infrastructure. Working here offers the chance to directly accelerate decarbonization of transportation at scale while shaping emerging regulatory frameworks.

About This Role

This Director role will be TeraWatt's primary external voice on policy and regulatory matters, specifically advocating for commercial fleet charging needs across multiple jurisdictions. You'll shape rate designs that reward fleet flexibility, streamline utility processes for co-located distributed energy resources, and secure grid investments to support high-capacity charging infrastructure. Your work will directly enable faster deployment of fleet charging hubs by removing regulatory barriers.

💡 A Day in the Life

You might start your day reviewing new PUC filings in California related to transportation electrification, then prepare comments on a rate case affecting demand charges for fleet charging. In the afternoon, you could brief internal teams on regulatory developments, coordinate with trade groups on joint advocacy efforts, and strategize with consultants about upcoming legislative sessions in priority states. Much of your work involves balancing immediate regulatory engagement with long-term policy shaping.

🎯 Who TeraWatt Infrastructure Is Looking For

  • Has 8-12 years of hands-on experience with California PUC proceedings, specifically around rate design, transportation electrification plans (TEPs), or interconnection processes
  • Possesses an existing network of relationships with California regulatory officials, key industry trade groups (like CALSTART, NAATBatt), and relevant state agencies
  • Has testified or submitted formal comments before state PUCs on topics directly relevant to EV charging infrastructure and fleet electrification
  • Understands the unique challenges of commercial fleet charging (high utilization, demand charges, grid integration) versus consumer EV charging

📝 Tips for Applying to TeraWatt Infrastructure

1

Quantify your impact on specific PUC proceedings - mention docket numbers, rate cases, or TEPs you've influenced and the tangible outcomes

2

Demonstrate understanding of commercial fleet charging economics - mention demand charges, time-of-use rates, or grid services revenue streams for fleets

3

Highlight your California regulatory network by naming specific agencies, officials, or trade groups you've worked with (avoid generic terms)

4

Show how you've advocated for specialized rates or streamlined processes - not just monitored proceedings

5

Connect your experience to TeraWatt's specific business model of developing charging infrastructure for commercial fleets, not consumer vehicles

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Your direct experience with California PUC proceedings on rate design or transportation electrification - be specific about dockets and outcomes', "How you've built relationships with regulatory officials that led to policy changes benefiting infrastructure deployment", 'Your understanding of commercial fleet charging challenges (demand charges, grid capacity, high utilization profiles)', 'Examples of advocating for utility planning cycles or funding that supported charging infrastructure development']

🔍 Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • TeraWatt's specific fleet charging projects and partnerships (like their I-10 corridor charging network for commercial trucks)
  • Recent California PUC decisions on transportation electrification plans (TEPs) and EV charging rates
  • Industry trade groups TeraWatt might engage with (CALSTART, NAATBatt, Electric Power Research Institute)
  • Utility distribution planning processes in key markets where TeraWatt operates or plans to expand

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 Walk us through a specific California PUC proceeding where you advocated for EV charging infrastructure - what was your strategy and outcome?
2 How would you approach building relationships with PUC commissioners in a new state market for TeraWatt?
3 What specialized rate elements would you propose to reward fleet flexibility for high-utilization charging?
4 How have you leveraged industry trade groups like CALSTART or NAATBatt to advance policy objectives?
5 Describe your experience managing regulatory consultants and budgets for multi-state advocacy efforts

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Focusing only on consumer EV charging policy without addressing commercial fleet-specific challenges
  • Vague references to 'government relations' without specific PUC experience or California regulatory knowledge
