How to Apply for Director of Origination

at esVolta

🏢 About esVolta

esVolta is a leader in large-scale battery energy storage solutions specifically focused on enhancing grid sustainability and reliability. Unlike general renewable energy companies, esVolta specializes exclusively in battery storage systems, positioning itself at the forefront of the energy transition by addressing critical grid stability challenges. Working here offers the opportunity to shape the future of energy infrastructure with a pure-play storage innovator.

About This Role

As Director of Origination, you'll own the entire Eastern market strategy across ERCOT, MISO, and SPP regions, driving revenue through structured offtake agreements for both development pipeline and operational assets. This role directly impacts esVolta's revenue growth by leading negotiations with utilities, data centers, and commercial customers while developing customized BESS-specific commercial structures. You'll serve as the primary commercial counterpart for long-term strategy in rapidly evolving energy storage markets.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day involves analyzing market fundamentals across ERCOT, MISO, and SPP to identify revenue opportunities, while leading negotiations on multiple offtake agreements simultaneously. You'll spend significant time building relationships with utility procurement teams and data center operators, then work closely with legal and finance colleagues to structure agreements that optimize value for esVolta's storage assets.

🎯 Who esVolta Is Looking For

  • 10+ years in power/utilities with proven track record structuring complex offtake agreements (tolls, capacity sales, hedges) specifically for energy storage or renewable projects
  • Deep, current relationships with utilities, co-ops, retailers, and hyperscaler/data center operators in ERCOT, MISO, and SPP territories
  • Expert-level understanding of ERCOT, MISO, and SPP market dynamics including transmission planning, resource adequacy, and real-time market operations
  • MBA or advanced degree with experience negotiating directly with legal and finance teams on structured energy transactions

📝 Tips for Applying to esVolta

1

Quantify your experience with specific metrics: 'negotiated X MW of storage capacity agreements in ERCOT' or 'structured $Y in BESS revenue contracts'

2

Highlight specific relationships with utilities/offtakers in ERCOT, MISO, or SPP - name companies and describe deal history

3

Demonstrate knowledge of esVolta's existing projects by referencing their portfolio in your application materials

4

Showcase experience with 'customized BESS-specific structures' mentioned in the job description, not just standard PPAs

5

Emphasize your understanding of transmission plans and IRPs in Eastern markets - show you can anticipate market opportunities

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Your specific experience structuring physical/financial offtake agreements for battery storage projects (not just solar/wind)', 'Demonstrated relationships with key customer segments mentioned: utilities, co-ops, munis, retailers, and hyperscaler/data center operators', "How you've developed market strategy across multiple RTOs/ISOs simultaneously", 'Examples of leading negotiations from term sheet through execution with legal/finance teams']

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Generic renewable energy experience without specific battery storage deal examples

  • Presenting as purely a relationship manager without demonstrating structured finance/contracting expertise
  • Not understanding the difference between BESS-specific structures and standard renewable energy PPAs
