How to Apply for Director of Advancement Operations and Annual Giving

at Hill Museum & Manuscript Library

๐Ÿข About Hill Museum & Manuscript Library

The Hill Museum & Manuscript Library (HMML) is a unique nonprofit that preserves and provides access to the world's largest archive of manuscript photographs, with over 500,000 manuscripts from diverse cultures. Working here means contributing to a mission that spans the globe, combining technology, cultural heritage, and education in a remote-friendly environment.

About This Role

As Director of Advancement Operations and Annual Giving, you'll be the backbone of HMML's fundraising efforts, managing donor data, gift processing, and analytics to drive strategic decisions. Your work ensures that donors are stewarded effectively and that the development team has the insights needed to grow support for HMML's critical preservation work.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

A typical day might start by checking emails and monitoring the gift processing queue, then diving into data cleanup or generating a report for an upcoming board meeting. You'd collaborate virtually with the development team to plan an annual giving appeal, ensuring the donor segments are precise. Later, you might analyze giving trends to identify lapsed donors and strategize with colleagues on re-engagement tactics.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Hill Museum & Manuscript Library

1

Highlight your experience with donor databases and data management, specifically naming the systems you've used (e.g., Raiser's Edge, Salesforce) and any data migration or cleanup projects you've led.

2

Showcase your ability to produce reports and analytics that informed fundraising decisions, providing concrete examples of how your data insights increased revenue or improved donor retention.

3

Emphasize your familiarity with annual giving campaigns, including direct mail, email appeals, and giving days, and any results you've achieved.

4

Since HMML is remote with a preference for Minnesota, mention your time zone flexibility and your experience working in distributed teams, and if you're in MN, highlight that.

5

Tailor your resume and cover letter to reflect HMML's mission of cultural preservationโ€”show that you understand the importance of their work and are motivated by it.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

- Express genuine interest in HMML's mission of preserving manuscripts and making them accessible globally, connecting your own values to their work. - Detail your technical expertise in advancement operations, specifically your proficiency with donor databases and data analysis tools. - Provide examples of how you've improved data processes or reporting to support fundraising goals. - Mention your experience with annual giving programs and your ability to work independently in a remote environment.

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don't overlook the importance of data management skillsโ€”this role is heavily focused on operations, so be sure to highlight your technical abilities, not just fundraising experience.
  • Avoid being vague about your experience with specific donor databases; be ready to discuss your hands-on use and any complex tasks you've handled.
  • Don't neglect to mention your remote work capabilities and availability; since the role is remote, emphasize your ability to work independently and communicate effectively across distances.
