How to Apply for Digital Projects IM Lead

at AECOM

🏢 About AECOM

AECOM is a global infrastructure consulting firm that builds sustainable legacies through innovative solutions. With a focus on energy, including transmission, distribution, renewables, and nuclear decommissioning, AECOM is at the forefront of the digital transformation in the energy sector. Working here means contributing to major projects like the National Grid Great Grid Upgrade Programme, with a remote-friendly culture that values expertise and collaboration.

About This Role

As the Digital Projects IM Lead, you will lead the implementation of information management (IM) frameworks across major energy programmes, ensuring compliance with ISO 19650 and driving digital transformation. You will work within a central Digital Energy Team or one of the energy practices, balancing strategic oversight with hands-on project roles like Senior Project Information Manager. This role is pivotal in shaping how AECOM delivers complex infrastructure projects through advanced BIM/CAD delivery and data management.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day might involve leading a virtual meeting with the digital team to review BIM execution plans, then working with project managers to ensure information deliverables meet ISO 19650 standards. You might spend time analyzing data interfaces between different systems, providing guidance to engineers on information requirements, and collaborating with clients to align on digital deliverables. The day is a mix of strategic planning, hands-on problem-solving, and stakeholder communication, all from a remote setting.

📝 Tips for Applying to AECOM

1

Highlight specific experience with ISO 19650 and BIM/CAD delivery, using concrete examples from past projects, especially in energy or infrastructure sectors.

2

Emphasize your ability to manage data and interfaces at a programme level, showing how you've handled large-scale data integration and coordination.

3

Tailor your CV to reflect AECOM's focus on sustainable legacies and digital transformation, aligning your achievements with their mission.

4

Since the role is remote, demonstrate your remote work capabilities and how you've successfully led teams or projects in a distributed environment.

5

Mention any familiarity with the UK energy sector, particularly transmission and distribution, and the Great Grid Upgrade Programme, to show your industry awareness.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

- Your hands-on experience with ISO 19650 and BIM delivery, with specific examples of implementing these frameworks on major projects. - Your ability to lead digital transformation and manage information at a programme level, ensuring data integrity and interface management. - Your enthusiasm for the energy sector and AECOM's role in sustainable infrastructure, showing you're aligned with their mission. - Your remote work experience and ability to collaborate effectively with distributed teams, given the remote nature of the role.

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 Describe a time you implemented ISO 19650 on a project. What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
2 How do you approach data and interface management on a large-scale programme? Can you provide an example?
3 How do you ensure compliance with BIM standards while managing multiple stakeholders and tight deadlines?
4 Given the remote nature of this role, how do you maintain effective communication and collaboration with your team and clients?
5 What experience do you have with the energy sector, particularly T&D or nuclear decommissioning, and how does that inform your approach to IM?

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Avoid generic statements about your interest in the role; instead, show specific knowledge of AECOM and the energy sector.
  • Don't overlook the remote aspect; failing to address how you work remotely or lead remote teams could be a red flag.
  • Avoid focusing only on CAD/BIM technical skills without demonstrating your ability to manage data and interfaces at a programme level, as this role requires strategic oversight.
