How to Apply for Development Lead

at Octopus Energy

๐Ÿข About Octopus Energy

Octopus Energy is revolutionizing the energy sector by leveraging AI, transparent pricing, and renewable technology to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future. Unlike traditional utilities, they combine tech innovation with customer-centric solutions, making them a leader in sustainable energy transformation. Working here means contributing directly to meaningful climate action while being part of a fast-growing, mission-driven company.

About This Role

As Development Lead, you'll spearhead technical solution design for on-site low-carbon projects (solar, wind, BESS) for Industrial & Commercial clients, directly supporting customer proposals and reducing carbon emissions. You'll build Octopus's initial I&C project pipeline by leading system specifications and cultivating key supplier relationships with OEMs and EPCs. This role is pivotal in scaling Octopus's behind-the-meter offerings, bridging technical expertise with commercial strategy to drive market traction.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

A typical day involves collaborating with sales teams to refine technical proposals for I&C clients, analyzing site data to model solar/BESS system performance, and meeting with EPC suppliers to negotiate equipment specs and costs. You'll spend time coordinating with Octopus's procurement and engineering teams to integrate capabilities, ensuring projects align with cost and carbon reduction targets while advancing the behind-the-meter pipeline.

๐ŸŽฏ Who Octopus Energy Is Looking For

  • Has 5+ years of hands-on experience in distributed energy or on-site low-carbon solutions specifically for I&C-scale business customers in the UK.
  • Possesses deep technical expertise in power systems engineering, technical modeling (e.g., HOMER, PVsyst), site evaluations, and equipment specs for solar/BESS projects.
  • Demonstrates a proven track record in managing EPC/OEM supplier relationships, prioritizing cost, quality, and reliability in the UK market.
  • Combines strong grounding in low-carbon tech (solar, batteries) with the ability to collaborate across teams to integrate technical capabilities for behind-the-meter propositions.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Octopus Energy

1

Quantify your experience with I&C-scale projectsโ€”mention specific MW capacity, carbon reduction metrics, or cost savings achieved in previous roles.

2

Highlight your familiarity with the UK EPC market: name specific suppliers or projects you've worked with, and discuss how you've evaluated partners for reliability.

3

Tailor your resume to include keywords from the job description: 'technical system modeling,' 'site evaluations,' 'OEM/EPC relationships,' and 'behind-the-meter.'

4

Showcase any experience with AI or data-driven solutions in energy projects, aligning with Octopus's tech-forward approach.

5

If you have renewable energy certifications (e.g., CEM, PV design), include them prominently to validate your technical grounding.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Explain how your technical expertise in on-site solar/BESS systems directly applies to developing Octopus's I&C pipeline, citing a relevant project example.", "Describe your experience in building supplier relationships with EPCs/OEMs in the UK, emphasizing how you've balanced cost, quality, and reliability.", "Demonstrate your understanding of Octopus's mission by linking your work to reducing carbon emissions and supporting site resilience for business customers.", 'Highlight your ability to collaborate across teams, as the role requires working with procurement and other groups to deliver behind-the-meter propositions.']

๐Ÿ” Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • โ†’ Study Octopus's recent I&C projects or partnerships (e.g., with Tesla, solar farms) to understand their market approach and technical preferences.
  • โ†’ Review their 'Zero Carbon Britain' strategy and how behind-the-meter solutions fit into their broader goal of a low-CO2 future.
  • โ†’ Explore their use of AI and technology in energy management (e.g., Kraken platform) to discuss how it could enhance on-site solutions.
  • โ†’ Look into UK regulatory trends for I&C renewable energy projects, such as grid constraints or incentive schemes, to show market awareness.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 Walk us through your process for conducting a technical site evaluation and system design for an I&C solar-plus-storage project.
2 How do you prioritize and manage relationships with multiple EPC suppliers to ensure cost-effectiveness and reliability?
3 Describe a time you developed a customer proposal for a low-carbon tech solution that balanced cost savings, resilience, and emission reductions.
4 What technical modeling tools have you used for on-site power systems, and how did they inform equipment specifications?
5 How would you approach integrating Octopus's AI capabilities into behind-the-meter solutions for I&C customers?

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Applying with generic energy experience but no specific examples of I&C-scale, behind-the-meter projects in the UK.
  • Overemphasizing residential solar experience without connecting it to the commercial/industrial focus of this role.
  • Failing to demonstrate supplier management skills or understanding of the EPC/OEM landscape in the UK energy market.
