How to Apply for Data Lead/Head of Data

at Goodstack

🏢 About Goodstack

Goodstack is a Series A social impact startup backed by General Catalyst, powering global change by enabling companies like Google, OpenAI, and TikTok to seamlessly integrate donations and volunteering into their operations. In 2025 alone, they facilitated $5 billion in donations to nonprofits, making them one of Europe's fastest-growing SaaS companies with a mission to revolutionize how the world does good.

About This Role

As the Data Lead/Head of Data, you will architect and lead Goodstack's data function from scratch, building the infrastructure, pipelines, and analytics that power decision-making and product insights across the company. This is a high-impact role where you'll shape data strategy, mentor a growing team, and directly influence how Goodstack scales its platform to handle billions in donations.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day might start with a standup with your data team to review pipeline health and prioritize tasks, followed by deep work on designing a new dbt model for donation attribution. After lunch, you might meet with the product team to discuss data requirements for a new feature, then spend the afternoon debugging a Snowflake query performance issue and mentoring a junior analyst on best practices.

🎯 Who Goodstack Is Looking For

  • You have 7+ years of experience building data functions at fast-growing startups, with a track record of scaling data infrastructure from 0 to 1.
  • You are deeply technical, hands-on with modern data tools (dbt, Airflow, Snowflake, Databricks, Looker) and proficient in SQL and Python or TypeScript.
  • You are a strategic thinker who can align data initiatives with business goals, yet willing to dive into the weeds to debug pipelines or optimize queries.
  • You are a strong communicator who can influence stakeholders with data storytelling and have experience hiring and leading data teams in a remote-first environment.

📝 Tips for Applying to Goodstack

1

Highlight your experience building data functions from scratch at a similar stage startup, including specific metrics (e.g., data pipeline uptime, query performance improvements).

2

Showcase your work with donation or financial transaction data, as Goodstack handles sensitive donation flows and compliance requirements.

3

Mention any experience with real-time data processing or event-driven architectures, given the need to track donation events across global enterprises.

4

Tailor your resume to emphasize hands-on technical work (e.g., dbt models, Airflow DAGs) alongside leadership achievements.

5

Include a brief note about your passion for social impact – Goodstack's mission is core to their culture, and they value candidates who care about doing good.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Emphasize your experience scaling data infrastructure at a fast-growing tech company, linking it to Goodstack's Series A growth stage.", 'Explain how your technical skills (dbt, Airflow, Snowflake, etc.) directly address their need for a hands-on data leader.', 'Show your strategic mindset by outlining a vision for how data can drive product decisions and business growth at Goodstack.', 'Express genuine enthusiasm for the social impact mission and how your work can help facilitate billions in donations more effectively.']

  • Read about their investors (General Catalyst) and compare their growth trajectory to other Series A startups in the social impact space.
  • Look into their blog or press releases for any mentions of data challenges or milestones, such as the $5 billion donation figure.
  • Familiarize yourself with the regulatory landscape for donations (e.g., GDPR, charity regulations) as it impacts data handling.

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 How would you design a data architecture to handle donation events from multiple enterprise clients with varying data formats and compliance needs?
2 Describe a time you built a data team from scratch. What were the first hires you made and why?
3 How do you prioritize data projects when there are competing demands from engineering, product, and business teams?
4 Walk us through a complex data pipeline you built, including the tools used and how you ensured data quality and reliability.
5 How would you measure the impact of Goodstack's platform on donation outcomes and communicate that to non-technical stakeholders?

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don't focus solely on management experience; this role requires significant hands-on technical work, so downplay that at your peril.
  • Avoid generic statements about 'data-driven decision making' without concrete examples of how you've implemented it.
  • Don't ignore the social impact aspect – failing to show genuine interest in Goodstack's mission can signal cultural misalignment.
