How to Apply for Consumer Reporting and Data Advocacy Attorney

at NATIONAL CONSUMER LAW CENTER®

🏢 About NATIONAL CONSUMER LAW CENTER®

The National Consumer Law Center (NCLC) is a pioneering nonprofit that has been fighting for economic justice for low-income and disadvantaged communities since 1969. As a leading source of consumer law expertise, NCLC combines rigorous legal analysis with impactful advocacy to shape policy and protect vulnerable populations. Working here means joining a mission-driven team that values both deep expertise and a commitment to racial and economic equity.

About This Role

This role focuses on combating abuses by credit reporting agencies, tenant and employment screeners, and data brokers that disproportionately harm low-income and marginalized communities. You will engage in federal and state legislative advocacy, produce influential research and policy analysis, and support impact litigation. Your work will directly help curb predatory data practices and ensure fair access to housing, employment, and credit.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day might start with reviewing a new proposed rule from the CFPB on background checks, then drafting comments with legal analysis. Midday, you could join a coalition call with legal aid attorneys to strategize on state legislation limiting tenant screening. Afternoon might be spent updating a chapter of NCLC's Fair Credit Reporting manual or preparing a webinar for advocates on disputing errors in credit reports.

🎯 Who NATIONAL CONSUMER LAW CENTER® Is Looking For

  • A lawyer with 3+ years of public interest experience, ideally including consumer protection, civil rights, or data privacy advocacy.
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial justice and working with low-income communities, evidenced by prior work, pro bono service, or community involvement.
  • Strong legal research and writing skills, with experience drafting policy briefs, legislative testimony, or amicus briefs.
  • Comfortable working remotely and independently, but also able to collaborate across teams and with external partners like legal aid attorneys and grassroots organizations.

📝 Tips for Applying to NATIONAL CONSUMER LAW CENTER®

1

Highlight any direct experience with credit reporting, tenant screening, or data broker issues in your resume and cover letter—even if from a clinic or pro bono project.

2

Showcase your legislative or administrative advocacy work: mention specific bills, agency comments, or rulemaking proceedings you've contributed to.

3

Emphasize your ability to translate complex legal concepts for non-legal audiences, such as through training materials, webinars, or community education.

4

If you have experience with impact litigation (even as a co-counsel or law clerk), detail your role and the outcomes.

5

Tailor your cover letter to NCLC's mission: explicitly connect your past work to their focus on low-income and disadvantaged consumers, and mention racial justice explicitly.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Your commitment to economic and racial justice, with specific examples of how you've served low-income or marginalized communities.", 'Relevant experience in consumer protection law, especially credit reporting, tenant screening, or data privacy.', 'Your ability to engage in multiple advocacy strategies: legislative, regulatory, litigation support, and public education.', 'Why NCLC specifically—reference their history, publications (e.g., Consumer Credit and Sales Legal Practice Series), or recent advocacy campaigns.']

🔍 Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • Review NCLC's recent reports and blog posts on credit reporting and data privacy (e.g., on medical debt, tenant screening, or algorithmic bias).
  • Read NCLC's amicus briefs in key Supreme Court or circuit court cases involving the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
  • Understand NCLC's role in the Stop the Debt Trap campaign and their partnerships with other advocacy groups.
  • Familiarize yourself with NCLC's Consumer Credit and Sales Legal Practice Series, especially the volumes on credit reporting and collection.

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 Describe your experience with credit reporting issues. How would you approach a new rulemaking by the CFPB on medical debt reporting?
2 How do you balance legislative advocacy with litigation support? Give an example of a time you used both strategies.
3 How do you ensure your work centers racial equity? Provide a concrete example from your career.
4 NCLC publishes manuals and provides training. How would you develop a training for legal aid attorneys on tenant screening rights?
5 You have to advocate on a complex technical issue (e.g., FCRA preemption). How do you make it accessible to policymakers and the public?

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Avoid a generic cover letter that doesn't mention NCLC's specific focus on low-income consumers and racial justice—this is central to their identity.
  • Don't overemphasize corporate or private practice experience without linking it to public interest goals; NCLC seeks advocates, not litigators for hire.
  • Avoid vague references to 'consumer protection' without showing knowledge of the credit reporting ecosystem and its impact on marginalized communities.
