## About CivAI

CivAI is a non-profit that educates the public about AI risks using live software demonstrations. To date, CivAI has delivered 100+ briefings to organizations across civil society (on AI-cyber risks, elder fraud, and loss of control) and the US government (on biological risks, elections, and more). Our work has been featured on national television by ABC News and Scripps News, and in print by the New York Times, the Washington Post, TIME, CNN, and many others.

Over the past few quarters, we have been running experiments on how best to communicate AI risks at scale across the United States. Experiments have included:

• Publishing an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal
• Launching interactive explainers and even a game
• Partnering with creators to post short videos
• Authoring articles, blogs, and graphics for diverse audiences
In order for the world to meet the moment, it is our conviction that many, many more people need to understand this epochal technology and its concomitant risks. Only then will there be sufficient pressure for careful, conscientious development of AI — a stark contrast to the haphazard race we're facing now.

For this role, we invite you to come join us in this important work of communicating AI risks to the billions of people across the world who deserve to know.

***We'd love to hear from you! If you have any questions about this role, please email us at [email protected].***

## About the role

As Communications Generalist, you will contribute to day-to-day operations of CivAI's public-facing work. This means coordinating launches of new demos and content, managing our social media presence, working with creators and contractors, and ensuring that our work actually reaches the people who need to see it. You'll also contribute to our ongoing experimentation—helping us figure out which audiences to target and what channels work best. This is a generalist role in a new function that we're building, and we're looking for someone organized and agentic who can keep many workstreams moving while we figure out what works.

If we think of CivAI as a startup, we can divide the organization into R&D and GTM (go-to-market). While R&D produces concrete evidence (e.g. these public demos), GTM ensures that the work achieves maximum impact with the right audiences. Your role will be to help drive and expand our GTM efforts.

## Key responsibilities

• Coordinating launches of new content, demos, press, and more.
• Managing our social media presence across platforms.
• Working with a roster of creators, writers, contractors, and external partners to produce and distribute content.
• Contributing to experiments to communicate AI risks to the general public.
• Identifying and refining ideal customer profiles for our work.
• Measuring results and iterating based on what we learn.
• Amplifying our capacity by implementing new tools, especially AI.
• Building systems to turn successful experiments into scalable, repeatable processes.
## You might be a good fit if you:

• Have worked in communications, operations, partnerships, or a generalist role—ideally at a startup, nonprofit, or campaign where you wore many hats.
• Have past experience communicating social issues to the public, e.g. via campaigns, movements, social media, or other forms of mass media.
• Alternatively, you have experience as a generalist problem-solver (consulting or product management), or you recently graduated with relevant projects in your portfolio.
• Operate with strong personal agency. You proactively initiate new projects and persevere in bringing them to life. You keep projects moving despite multiple workstreams and stakeholders.
• Feel comfortable wearing multiple hats beyond your core responsibilities. We operate as a startup and consider any task within scope.
• Have strong opinions on what makes for good communication, what other groups are doing it well, and what is missing from the discourse.
• Are deeply aligned with CivAI's mission of helping the world better understand the implications and risks of advanced AI.
## Salary and benefits

• The role is full-time and on-site at our office in Berkeley.
• The salary range is $110,000 - $140,000.
• Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
• We provide catered lunch and dinner at our office every weekday.
• We cannot sponsor visas at this time. (However, please feel free to get in touch, as we hope to do so in the future.)
## Application process

• Initial application (1.5 hrs) — Resume and short answer questions.
• Hiring manager interview (1 hr) — We'll work through a problem together and discuss current priorities at CivAI.
• Team interview (45 min) — You'll have a conversation with another member of our team.
• Written take-home test (3 hrs) — You'll be given a take-home challenge specific to your role.
• Reference checks — We'll reach out to the references you provide.
• Final round interview (4 hrs) — You'll work through one more problem, explain your past work, and speak with both founders.
*CivAI is an equal opportunity workplace, and we welcome applicants from all backgrounds regardless of race, color, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, age, socioeconomic status, disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.*
