Chief of Staff

Responsibilities / What You'll Do

• Work directly with the Executive Director, taking ownership of projects across the organization to help Tarbell run smoothly and grow sustainably as it scales from 10 to 20+ staff over the next two years
• Take on a rotating set of the organization's most important projects: coordinating across programs, supporting fundraising, owning external communications, and stepping in wherever skills are most needed
• Serve as a central liaison across Fellowship, Grants, Transformer, and Residencies programs, tracking progress against organizational goals and ensuring effective information flow
• Lead special projects that span multiple workstreams or don't fit neatly into existing programs, such as supporting hiring processes, launching new programs, running events, or establishing an Advisory Board

This role helps scale an organization that supports journalism essential for society to understand and respond to AI advancements, with the goal of growing Tarbell into the leading institution supporting AI journalism globally by 2030.

Required skills and qualifications:

• Strong project management skills with ability to juggle multiple workstreams and maintain organization under pressure
• Independent execution capability to take ownership of complex programs and drive them forward without constant direction
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills to represent Tarbell professionally to diverse audiences
• Good judgment to build trust easily, navigate organizational dynamics skillfully, and know when to escalate issues
• Mission alignment with Tarbell's mission to support journalism that helps society navigate AI development and deployment
• Bonus: 3+ years experience in demanding, multi-stakeholder environments (strategy consulting, startup operations, program management, or supporting senior leadership)
• Bonus: Deep familiarity with AI development and governance topics

Compensation and benefits:

• Salary: $90,000 - $125,000+ in the US; £60,000 - £75,000+ in the UK based on experience and seniority (higher for exceptional candidates)
• 33 days of annual leave in total (including national holidays)
• 16 weeks of paid parental leave, increasing to 24 weeks after 3 years of service
• $2,000+ per year in professional development funding
