How to Apply for Career Coach, Program

at Merit America

🏢 About Merit America

Merit America is unique as a national nonprofit that specifically targets Americans stuck in low-wage work, offering fast, flexible pathways to family-sustaining careers through part-time programs combining online learning with personalized coaching. Someone might want to work here because it's mission-driven work with tangible impact, focusing on economic mobility for underserved populations through innovative, scalable solutions.

About This Role

As a Career Coach, Program at Merit America, you'll provide personalized 1:1 and group coaching to help learners from low-wage backgrounds achieve career readiness and job placement. This role is impactful because you'll directly support individuals' economic mobility through resume building, interview preparation, LinkedIn optimization, and progress monitoring in a remote coaching environment.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day involves conducting remote 1:1 coaching sessions via video call, reviewing and providing feedback on learners' resumes and LinkedIn profiles, facilitating small group coaching sessions on job search strategies, monitoring learner progress through online portals, and proactively reaching out to learners who need additional support. You'll balance direct coaching with administrative tracking and collaborative planning with other coaches.

🎯 Who Merit America Is Looking For

  • Has 2+ years of hands-on experience with resume/cover letter writing, interview coaching, LinkedIn optimization, and job search strategies (not just theoretical knowledge)
  • Demonstrates experience working with diverse populations in coaching, counseling, or education roles, preferably in nonprofit or mission-driven environments
  • Shows strong relationship-building skills with evidence of empathy and ability to motivate adults from varied socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Is comfortable with remote coaching tools and data tracking, with experience proactively intervening when clients/students fall behind

📝 Tips for Applying to Merit America

1

Highlight specific examples of helping individuals from low-wage or underserved backgrounds with career transitions in your resume

2

Quantify your coaching impact (e.g., 'coached 50+ adults on interview skills with 85% job placement rate') rather than listing generic responsibilities

3

Demonstrate familiarity with Merit America's specific programs by mentioning their part-time, flexible learning model in your application materials

4

Show remote coaching competency by mentioning specific tools you've used (Zoom, Slack, learning management systems) and strategies for maintaining engagement

5

Emphasize both your technical career coaching skills AND your ability to build supportive relationships with diverse learners

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Your specific experience with career coaching for adults from low-wage or underserved backgrounds', "Examples of how you've provided constructive feedback on resumes and interview skills that led to measurable outcomes", 'Your approach to building supportive relationships remotely and motivating learners who may face significant barriers', "Why Merit America's mission of creating pathways to family-sustaining careers resonates with your personal or professional values"]
