How to Apply for Adult GED and Pre-GED Math/Science (STEM) Instructors (Part-time)

at Beyond Literacy

๐Ÿข About Beyond Literacy

Beyond Literacy is Philadelphia's largest adult literacy nonprofit, uniquely positioned as it provides completely cost-free educational services to over 1500 adults annually. Working here means directly impacting adult learners' lives through accessible education in English language learning, GED-prep, digital literacy, and career preparation, all within a mission-driven environment focused on breaking cycles of poverty through literacy.

About This Role

This part-time remote role involves instructing adult learners at various educational functioning levels in Math and Science subjects for GED and Pre-GED preparation. You'll be responsible for reviewing student data to create targeted lessons, integrating technology into instruction, and monitoring progress through assessmentsโ€”directly contributing to adult learners' academic and career advancement in STEM fields.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

A typical day starts by reviewing learner data and assessments to identify gaps in Math or Science understanding, then preparing a remote lesson that integrates tools like digital whiteboards or interactive quizzes. You'll conduct a live virtual class with adult learners at different skill levels, using breakout rooms for differentiated activities, followed by informal progress checks and updating records for progress reports.

๐ŸŽฏ Who Beyond Literacy Is Looking For

  • Holds a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Science, Engineering, or a related STEM field with practical knowledge applicable to GED-level instruction
  • Has at least one year of classroom teaching experience (including internships, volunteer teaching, or tutoring) with demonstrated ability to adapt to diverse learning levels
  • Understands College and Career Readiness Standards and can create standards-based lesson plans that align with adult education goals
  • Possesses experience or strong interest in adult education or alternative education settings, with sensitivity to adult learners' unique challenges and motivations

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Beyond Literacy

1

Highlight any experience with adult learners or alternative education in your resume, even if it was volunteer or informal tutoringโ€”Beyond Literacy values this background

2

Explicitly mention your familiarity with College and Career Readiness Standards and provide a brief example of how you've used them in lesson planning

3

Describe specific technologies you've integrated into teaching (like digital whiteboards, educational apps, or online assessment tools) since technology integration is a core responsibility

4

Tailor your application to show alignment with Beyond Literacy's mission of cost-free adult educationโ€”mention any volunteer work or passion for literacy advocacy

5

If you have Philadelphia-area connections or understanding of the local community's educational needs, subtly incorporate this to show cultural awareness
