Legal Director (Legal Nonprofit)

Core responsibilities:

• Develop and execute S.T.O.P.'s litigation strategy with focus on surveillance technology and government transparency
• Lead impact litigation in state and federal courts, manage case planning and relationships with outside counsel
• Oversee public records request practice including drafting requests, managing appeals, and litigating denials
• Supervise and mentor legal staff, build internal legal systems, and contribute to organizational strategy as senior leadership

This role creates positive change by leading legal efforts to dismantle harmful surveillance systems, demanding transparency and accountability for government use of novel technologies, and protecting civil rights in the digital age through impact litigation and policy advocacy.

Required qualifications:

• JD and New York State bar admission with 5+ years of relevant legal experience
• Substantial litigation experience in civil rights, constitutional, impact, and/or complex litigation
• Demonstrated expertise in motion practice, discovery, litigation strategy, and strong legal writing skills
• Experience supervising or mentoring junior attorneys and staff, with ability to manage teams and workflows
• Strong alignment with S.T.O.P.'s mission and commitment to racial, economic, gender, immigration, and disability justice
