Senior Research Engineer

• Lead projects in existing workstreams such as detecting and preventing deception, preventing catastrophic misuse, or accelerating research through infrastructure development
• Increase the technical depth of AI safety research and enable answering research questions more definitively and at larger scale
• Join one of the core competency areas: Machine Learning, High-Performance Computing, or Technical Leadership
• Contribute to diversifying and deepening the research portfolio as the organization grows

This role contributes to ensuring advanced AI is safe and beneficial for everyone by conducting breakthrough AI safety research, advancing global understanding of AI risks and solutions, and fostering a coordinated global response to AI safety challenges.

• Significant software engineering experience demonstrated through prior work and open-source contributions
• Fluency in Python programming
• Results-oriented mindset with motivation for impactful research
• Prior experience mentoring other engineers or scientists in engineering skills
• Expertise in one of: Machine Learning (training transformers with PyTorch/jax, knowledge of linear algebra/calculus/statistics), High-Performance Computing (Kubernetes/SLURM, distributed systems, GPU optimization), or Technical Leadership (software architecture, project management)

Compensation: $150,000-$250,000/year depending on experience and location, with potential for additional compensation for exceptional candidates. Benefits include: work-related travel and equipment expenses covered, catered lunch and dinner at Berkeley offices.
