Astrophysics Institute Program Scientist [Observatory Operations Expert]

Core responsibilities:

• Guide major astrophysics projects from concept through commissioning and steady-state operations
• Design, implement, and optimize operational strategies for ground- and space-based observatories
• Work closely with internal staff, grantee teams, and partner institutions on observatory operations
• Design and prototype an Observatory Operations Center to create a model for philanthropic investment in astrophysics infrastructure

This role helps ensure that cutting-edge telescopes and instruments deliver transformative science, expanding our knowledge of the universe and creating models for philanthropic investment in astrophysics infrastructure.

Required qualifications:

• Expert in observatory operations including commissioning, ConOps, scheduling, and long-term facility support
• Deep technical and operational expertise in astrophysics facilities
• Experience with cutting-edge telescopes and instruments
• Ability to work with diverse teams including internal staff, grantee teams, and partner institutions
